Is It Permissible to Offer Jumu‘ah Prayer at Home by Listening to the Imām’s Voice? – Complete Fatwā
Source: Fatāwā Arkān-e-Islām

Question:
If a Muslim can hear the voice of the imām, is it permissible for him to perform the Jumu‘ah prayer at home?

Answer:
Al-ḥamdu lillāh, waṣ-ṣalātu was-salāmu ‘alā Rasūlillāh, ammā ba‘d!

The correct way to perform the Jumu‘ah prayer is for a Muslim to attend the mosque and offer it in congregation with the rest of the Muslims. Performing Jumu‘ah in congregation at the mosque is the only permissible and legislated method.

Exception Due to Necessity

✿ If the mosque becomes full and the rows extend to the streets or other areas outside the mosque, then performing the prayer outside in such cases is permissible due to necessity.

Ruling on Praying at Home

✿ Performing Jumu‘ah prayer at home or in one’s shop is never permissible, even if the imām’s voice is clearly audible inside the house.

Purpose of the Jumu‘ah Prayer

✿ The main objective of Jumu‘ah and congregational prayer is not only to perform the prayer, but also to gather the Muslims together.

From this gathering:
◈ The sense of the Muslim Ummah is strengthened.
◈ Love and affection develop among the Muslims.
◈ The ignorant learn from the knowledgeable, and knowledge is exchanged.

If People Were Allowed to Do This

✿ If every Muslim were told:
◈ “You can listen to the khutbah on the radio and then perform the prayer.”
◈ Or: “You can pray at home after hearing the imām’s voice on the loudspeaker.”

The result would be:
◈ The importance of mosques would diminish.
◈ People would stop attending the mosque.
◈ The collective system of Jumu‘ah and congregation would collapse.

Therefore, this practice is absolutely incorrect, and permitting it would be tantamount to harming the collective structure of the religion.
