Ruling on Making Up Missed Prayers During Prohibited Times with Evidence
Source: Ahkam wa Masail – Kitab al-Salat, Vol.1, p.111
Question:
If the ‘Isha prayer is missed and the time for Fajr has already begun, can one perform the Qada of ‘Isha immediately after Fajr (before sunrise), or not?
Answer:
Alhamdulillah, wassalatu wassalamu ‘ala Rasulillah, amma ba‘d!
◈ Order of Missed and Current Prayer
- If ‘Isha prayer was missed and Fajr time has begun, then first ‘Isha must be made up (Qada) and then Fajr should be prayed.
Evidence:
The Prophet ﷺ said:
«لَيْسَ فِي النَّوْمِ تَفْرِيطٌ إِنَّمَا التَّفْرِيطُ فِي الْيَقَظَةِ، فَإِذَا نَسِيَ أَحَدُكُمْ صَلَاةً أَوْ نَامَ عَنْهَا فَلْيُصَلِّهَا إِذَا ذَكَرَهَا، فَإِنَّ اللهَ تَعَالَى قَالَ: وَأَقِمِ الصَّلَاةَ لِذِكْرِي»
(Sahih Muslim, Kitab al-Masajid, Bab Qada al-Salat al-Fa’itah)
Translation:
“There is no negligence in sleep; negligence is only while awake. If anyone forgets a prayer or sleeps through it, let him pray it when he remembers, for Allah has said: ‘Establish the prayer for My remembrance.’”
◈ Example from the Battle of Ahzab
During the Battle of Ahzab, the Prophet ﷺ missed ‘Asr and Maghrib, and when the time for ‘Isha had come, he prayed:
- First ‘Asr,
- Then Maghrib,
- Then ‘Isha.
This shows that missed prayers should be made up in order.
◈ Prohibited Times and Qada Prayers
- No voluntary (Nafl) prayers should be offered:
- After Fajr until sunrise,
- After ‘Asr until sunset.
- However, this prohibition applies only to Nafl prayers without cause.
- Missed Fard prayers can be made up even during these times, because the prohibition does not apply to them.
✅ Summary:
- Missed ‘Isha should be prayed first, then Fajr.
- Qada prayers are permissible even in prohibited times.
- The prohibition applies only to Nafl prayers without cause, not to Qada of Fard prayers.
