❖ Question
Is it necessary for the person who bathes a deceased to perform Ghusl (ritual bath)? The following two Hadiths appear to be contradictory:
① The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said:
“Whoever bathes a deceased person should perform Ghusl himself.”
(Narrated by Tirmidhi; authenticated by Ibn Hazm – Nayl al-Awtar 1/907)
② The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said:
“There is no Ghusl upon you after bathing your deceased. Indeed, he is your deceased, not impure. It is sufficient for you to wash your hands.”
(Sahih al-Jami’ al-Saghir by al-Albani: 2/952)
❖ Answer
There is no contradiction between the two Hadiths you have cited.
The second Hadith — “There is no Ghusl upon you…” — serves as an indication and contextual evidence that the command “should perform Ghusl” in the first Hadith is a recommendation (Amr al-Nadb) and not an obligation (Amr al-Wujub).
✿ Key Point:
Thus, the Ghusl for the one who bathes the deceased is recommended but not obligatory.
