Introduction to Magic, Jinn, and Shariah Treatment + Conditions of Ruqyah

Magic is a satanic act performed through humans and jinn.

It is condemned in the Quran, and the People of the Book, especially, have been involved in it (Jews and Christians).

Important Point:

In Islam, magic is a serious sin, and its treatment is effective only according to the teachings of the Quran and Sunnah.

It is necessary to avoid false practitioners, fabricated incantations, and ignorant healers.

Hafiz Ibn Hajar Asqalani, may Allah have mercy on him, says:

“Scholars have consensus that performing ruqyah (spiritual healing) is permissible with three conditions:”

«أجمع العلماء على جواز الرقى عند اجتماع ثلاثة شروط»

Reference: (Fath al-Bari 10/206)

Three Conditions for the Permissibility of Ruqyah:

Ruqyah should only be from the Quran, the Beautiful Names of Allah, or the Divine Attributes, or those supplications proven from the Ahadith.

Ruqyah should be in the Arabic language, not translated words or self-invented phrases.

There should be the belief that healing occurs only by Allah’s permission; ruqyah itself does not have effect but is merely a supplication.

Additional Conditions and Etiquettes:

Ruqyah should not be performed in impurity, graveyards, or unlawful places.

Avoid words of polytheism, words related to black magic, or talismans.

Both the person performing the ruqyah (spiritual healing) and the one arranging it must have firm belief in Tawheed and Sunnah.

Severe warning – on going to a fake practitioner or magician:

The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ said:

«مَنْ أَتَى كَاهِنًا، أَوْ عَرَّافًا فَصَدَّقَهُ بِمَا يَقُولُ، فَقَدْ كَفَرَ بِمَا أُنْزِلَ عَلَى مُحَمَّدٍ ﷺ»

“Whoever goes to a soothsayer (magician) or astrologer and believes in what he says, has indeed disbelieved in the revelation sent to Muhammad ﷺ.”

Reference: (Musnad Ahmad: 9536)

In another hadith, it is stated:

«مَنْ أَتَى عَرَّافًا فَسَأَلَهُ عَنْ شَيْءٍ، لَمْ تُقْبَلْ لَهُ صَلَاةٌ أَرْبَعِينَ لَيْلَةً»

“Whoever goes to an astrologer and asks him about something, his prayers will not be accepted for forty nights.”

Reference: (Sahih Muslim: 2230)

Signs of Magic and Evil Eye – In Sleep and Wakefulness

Recognizing the signs before taking protective measures is very important. Signs of magic can appear in both sleep and wakeful states.

Signs during Sleep:

➊ Severe insomnia or not being able to sleep for hours
➋ Feeling as if someone is choking, sitting on the chest, or chasing in a dream
➌ Nightmares involving falling from the roof, being killed, falling into a well
➍ Seeing snakes, cats, black dogs, buffaloes, etc. in a dream
➎ Grinding teeth during sleep
➏ Laughing loudly or talking during sleep
➐ Repeatedly having the same dream or repeatedly seeing a specific place/person in a dream

Symptoms during wakefulness and during possession:

➊ Lack of interest in prayer or remembrance of Allah
➋ Feeling restless upon hearing the call to prayer or Quran recitation
➌ Feeling anxious repeatedly while reading the Quran, headaches, or mental pressure
➍ Chronic headaches that do not improve with medication
➎ Pain in a body part that persists despite medical treatment
➏ Mental confusion, whispers (waswas), and severe forgetfulness
➐ Constant laziness, lethargy, and lack of enthusiasm
➑ Heaviness in the chest, rapid heartbeat, severe pain in the back or shoulders
➒ Strange anxiety in a specific place (home, office)
❿ Appearance of scratches, bruises, or blade-like wounds on the body
⓫ Finding amulets, eggs, needles, nails, bird or animal meat, or a severed animal head in the house
⓬ Feeling the presence of someone while awake
⓭ Hearing frightening voices while sleeping or awake
⓮ Unusual fear of darkness
⓯ Intense occurrence of whispers (waswas)
⓰ Suddenly finding the husband or wife ugly despite their actual beauty
⓱ Sudden intense love or intense hatred
⓲ Preference for solitude and avoidance of gatherings
⓳ Seeing still objects move or feeling moving objects as stationary
⓴ Talking nonsense, staring with strange eyes
①② Lack of consistency in any work
②② Experiencing physical or mental seizures like convulsions
③② Receiving incomprehensible messages on mobile, Facebook, etc.

Important Reminder:

These symptoms sometimes are not visibly apparent, but the person is affected. If such a condition occurs, it is very important to turn to the Quran, supplications, and a truthful healer.

Types of Effects of Magic and Jinn:

➊ Complete effect: Dominance of magic or jinn over the entire body
➋ Partial effect: Permanent or temporary effect on a specific part of the body
➌ Chronic effect: Effect lasting for a long period
➍ Temporary effect: Effect appearing at specific times or conditions, such as satanic dreams or temporary psychological states

Fake Healers and Their Identification – Dangerous Magical Methods

Patients of magic often fall into the hands of healers who treat using methods based on polytheism and innovation. This is not only dangerous for faith but can also cause further harm to the patient.

Three Types of Healers (Therapists):

➊ Those who treat according to the Quran and Sunnah – permissible and Shariah-compliant
➋ Those who affect through trickery, sleight of hand, or fabricated actions
➌ Those who treat with the help of jinn, stars, or devils – this falls under disbelief

The 4 famous false methods of magicians:

① By pleasing the jinn:

They make the patient perform acts of shirk such as sacrifice in the name of someone other than Allah, specific words, or using filth.

② By making a pact with the jinn:

For example, putting salt on bread and throwing it into the air – this is considered a “sacrifice to the jinn.” This act is also shirk.

Hadith of the Prophet ﷺ – The incident of the sacrifice of the fly:
“A man sacrificed only a fly in front of an idol and went to Hell, and another denied it and became a martyr and went to Paradise.”

Reference: (Al-Radd Al-Mubeen ‘ala Bida’ Al-Mu’alijeen, p. 280)

③ Through dance and singing:

Group dancing, semi-nudity, perfume, candles, and sacrifice in the name of someone other than Allah – all these acts are forbidden and equivalent to worshipping devils.

④ Breaking magic with magic:

The sorcerer imposes powerful jinn on the patient to expel the jinn inside him. In exchange for temporary relief, the patient becomes possessed by the devil for a long time.

These harms include:
– Prayer acceptance stops
– Weakness in faith
– Permanent attachment to jinn
– Entry of disbelief beliefs

Signs of Fake and Un-Islamic Practitioners

Often people are impressed by the outward appearance or claims of those called practitioners, whereas they are sorcerers who lead a person into disbelief or polytheism.

Clear signs of a fake practitioner:

➊ Asking the patient, his mother, or a close relative’s name
➋ Requesting the patient’s clothes, hair, picture, or personal belongings
➌ Reciting unclear or strange words during treatment
➍ Prohibiting permissible things: such as forbidding eating meat or bathing
➎ Giving amulets containing squares, numbers, talismans, or cut-out Quranic words
➏ Touching non-mahram women or treating them in seclusion
➐ Instructing to slaughter an animal and advising to massage the body with its blood
➑ Claiming to summon jinn and seeking help from them
➒ Giving items that are instructed to be buried in a graveyard or hung in a specific place
❿ Neglecting the observance of prayer and fasting, and being heedless of the fundamental commands of religion
⓫ Committing forbidden acts such as smoking, intoxication, or immorality
⓬ Giving treatment to everyone who comes out of greed for money
⓭ Including un-Islamic oaths in one’s speech or swearing by anything other than Allah

Important Point:

If any of these signs are found in a healer, then he is a sorcerer, and seeking treatment from him is a grave sin and can sometimes even lead to disbelief.

Characteristics of a True Belief Spiritual Healer

According to the Quran and Sunnah, a spiritual healer who performs ruqyah is firm in belief, knowledge, piety, and character both individually and collectively. His intention is pure, his actions are according to Shariah, and his service is selfless.

Basic Signs of a True Belief Healer:

➊ Holds the beliefs of the pious predecessors – free from polytheism and innovation
➋ Adheres strictly to pure monotheism – in every word and deed
➌ Observes Shariah, maintains prayers and fasting
➍ Performs spiritual practices solely for the pleasure of Allah, not for fame or money
➎ Is a religious scholar, or at least a Hafiz of the Quran or a reciter
➏ Is familiar with the tricks of magic and jinn
➐ Completely avoids forbidden acts and illegitimate methods
➑ Practices enjoining good and forbidding evil
➒ Embodies good character – free from lying, envy, greed, and malice
❿ Knows the difference between halal and haram and acts accordingly
⓫ Completely avoids major sins and strives to avoid minor sins
⓬ Dresses and lives according to the Sunnah
⓭ Is not greedy for wealth, serves sincerely from the heart
⓮ Loves scholars and righteous people
⓯ Understands the types of jinn, devils, and magic
⓰ Completely avoids un-Islamic spiritual practices or prolonged retreats (chilla)
⓱ Has complete faith in Shariah-based spiritual practices and Quranic verses
⓲ Is trustworthy with the secrets of the patient – does not break confidence
⓳ Possesses a strong mind and physical strength to remain steadfast during treatment
⓴ Considers invitation and preaching as a mission, becomes a representative of the religion

Moral qualities are also necessary:

➊ Be modest, virtuous, and possess high morals
➋ Completely avoid the evil eye and lustful glances
➌ Encourage prayer, fasting, zakat, and remembrance of Allah
➍ Do not consider the beggar insignificant or foolish but wish well for them
➎ Have complete faith in the power of Allah’s words
➏ Have a calm temperament and perseverance – do not be hasty
➐ Always pray for the sick
➑ Hold yourself accountable daily – maintain dignity in solitude and in company

Important point:

Such a healer not only becomes a means of cure but also refines people’s faith and beliefs. This treatment itself is a missionary mission – not a business.

Shariah measures for protection from the evil of jinn and devils

Protection from jinn and devils is possible in the light of the Quran and Sunnah — provided the belief is correct, adherence to remembrances and acts of worship is maintained, and avoidance of the forbidden is observed.

Adopt the following measures to remain safe from jinn and devils:

1. Keep the intention pure at all times – only for Allah
2. Adopt the correct belief, have firm faith in Tawheed
3. Complete observance of Salah, fasting, Zakat, and other acts of worship
4. Always trust and rely on Allah in every situation
5. Adhere to the prescribed morning and evening remembrances
6. Begin every task with “Bismillah”
7. Fully observe the etiquettes of cleansing, using the toilet, and privacy

Dua:

«بِسْمِ اللّٰہِ، اللّٰهُمَّ إِنِّي أَعُوذُ بِكَ مِنَ الْخُبْثِ وَالْخَبَائِثِ»

➑ Always keep piety and fear of Allah alive in the heart
➒ Completely avoid innovations, polytheism, and superstitions
❿ Abstain from eating, seeing, and speaking what is forbidden
⓫ Stay away from satanic tools like singing, music, and obscenity
⓬ Completely avoid seclusion, evil eye, or physical relations with non-mahram
⓭ Maintain complete cleanliness of the body, clothes, and place – especially from children’s urine
⓮ Take a bath immediately after janabah (impurity), menstruation, and nocturnal emission
⓯ Do not dwell long on psychological, lustful, or angry thoughts
⓰ Do not stay alone in graveyards, bathrooms, deserted places, and dark rooms
⓱ Avoid domestic quarrels and disputes – promote love and maintaining kinship ties
⓲ Eat seven Ajwa dates on an empty stomach in the morning
⓳ Recite only those supplications proven from the Quran and Sunnah, without restricting to a specific number or place
⓴ Give charity and alms abundantly – it also purifies the heart

Additional Instructions:

1. Complete adherence to modesty – for both men and women
2. Women cutting their hair, getting massages, or growing nails invites magic
3. Men shaving their beards, or wearing trousers below the ankles brings the devil closer
4. Avoid backbiting, envy, grudges, lying, and joking – these cause spiritual weaknesses
5. Do not hang statues, showpieces, or pictures of living beings in homes
6. Repent sincerely from every sin and seek protection through prayer

Important Point:

All these measures are based on the Quran and Sunnah, and a person who adheres to them, God willing, will remain completely safe from magic, the evil eye, and the harm of devils.

Islamic Treatment and Supplications for Magic, Evil Eye, and Possession

Islam has taught both legal (Shariah) and natural methods for treating the effects of magic and jinn. These not only provide physical healing but also serve as a source of spiritual and faith-based strength.

1. Treatment with Black Seed (Habbat al-Sawda):

The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ said:

«فِي الحَبَّةِ السَّوْدَاءِ شِفَاءٌ مِنْ كُلِّ دَاءٍ إِلَّا السَّامَ»

“Black seed is a cure for every disease except death.”

Reference: (Sahih Bukhari: 5687)

2. Treatment with Honey:

Drinking a few spoons of pure honey on an empty stomach in the morning, and drinking warm water mixed with honey and black seed at night is beneficial.
Recite Surah Al-Fatiha, Surah Al-Jinn, and the four Quls seven times each over it for ruqyah.

3. Seven Ajwa Dates on an Empty Stomach:

The Prophet ﷺ said:

«مَنِ اصْطَبَحَ بِسَبْعِ تَمَرَاتٍ عَجْوَةٍ، لَمْ يَضُرَّهُ ذَلِكَ اليَوْمَ سَمٌّ، وَلاَ سِحْرٌ»

“Whoever eats seven Ajwa dates in the morning, neither poison nor magic will harm him that day.”

Reference: (Sahih Bukhari)

4. Treatment with Cupping (Hijama):

The Prophet ﷺ said:

«الشِّفَاءُ فِي ثَلَاثَةٍ: فِي شَرْطَةِ مِحْجَمٍ، أَوْ شَرْبَةِ عَسَلٍ، أَوْ كَيَّةِ نَارٍ، وَأَنَا أَنْهَى أُمَّتِي عَنِ الْكَيِّ»

“Healing is in three things: cupping, honey, and cauterization with fire. But I forbid cauterization with fire.”

Reference: (Sahih Bukhari: 5779)

5. Bath with Beri Leaves:

Crush seven green Beri leaves and put them in water.

Recite

Reference: Surah Al-Fatiha, Ayat al-Kursi, the four Quls, and the verses of dawn (Al-A’raf: 117, Yunus: 81, Taha: 69)

over it for ruqyah.
Drink three sips, and use the rest for bathing. Perform this daily with fresh preparation for at least 7 days.

6. Words of Reprimand and Rebuke:

The Prophet ﷺ said to the possessed person:
«أَعُوذُ بِاللّٰهِ مِنْكَ» (three times)
«أَلْعَنُكَ بِلَعْنَةِ اللّٰهِ» (three times)

«اخْرُجْ يَا عَدُوَّ اللّٰهِ، أَنَا رَسُولُ اللّٰهِ»

Reference: (Fath al-Bari, Book of Medicine)

7. Treatment with Zamzam and Rain Water:

The Prophet ﷺ said:

«مَاءُ زَمْزَمَ لِمَا شُرِبَ لَهُ»

“Zamzam water is beneficial for whatever intention it is drunk.”

Reference: (Sunan Ibn Majah: 3548)

8. Treatment of calamities through charity and almsgiving:

«تَصَدَّقُوا فَإِنَّ الصَّدَقَةَ تَفُكُّ الْبَلَاءَ»

“Give charity, indeed charity averts calamity.”

Reference: (Sahih Ibn Hibban, Mu’jam Tabarani, Sahih Al-Jami’)

9. Driving away Satan through the Adhan:

The Prophet ﷺ said:

«إِذَا أُذِّنَ لِلصَّلَاةِ أَدْبَرَ الشَّيْطَانُ وَلَهُ ضُرَاطٌ…»

“When the Adhan is pronounced, Satan turns his back and flees, expelling air.”

Reference: (Sahih Muslim: 389)

10. Removing and destroying bewitched objects:

– After the Isha prayer, repeatedly ask in supplications and remembrances to identify the bewitched object
– If jinn are present, ask them about the location, remove the objects, and burn them or dispose of them in water with prescribed remembrances

Reference: (Sahih Al-Jami’: 3358)

Note:

The fundamental conditions in all these methods are:
Correct belief
Reliance solely on Allah
Every action must be according to Sunnah

A Shariah Summary of Complete Protection and Spiritual Healing

Summary of Deliverance from Magic and Jinn:

1. Magic is a reality; denying it is disbelief, and its treatment without Shariah methods is futile.
2. The Quran and Sunnah are the only means of healing, which purify the heart, mind, and body – all three.
3. It is necessary to avoid un-Islamic practitioners, fake amulets, and superstitions involving shirk and innovations.
4. A Shariah-compliant healer is one who adheres to the beliefs of the pious predecessors, is practicing, pious, and possesses knowledge and good character.
5. Spiritual healing should never be a means of earning worldly income but should be a field of religious service and invitation.
6. Measures to protect from the evil of jinn and devils should be adopted in daily life – such as prayer, remembrance (adhkar), purification, saying Bismillah, piety, and charity.
7. Physical means for healing (black seed, honey, Ajwa dates, Zamzam water, cupping) should be used, but certainty of healing should be only from Allah.
8. Quranic verses, supplications, remembrance, call to prayer (Adhan), and charity are the greatest weapons.
9. Seeking treatment from magicians or believing in them destroys faith – complete avoidance of such acts is necessary.

Prophetic Saying ﷺ:

«مَنْ أَتَى كَاهِنًا فَصَدَّقَهُ بِمَا يَقُولُ، فَقَدْ كَفَرَ بِمَا أُنْزِلَ عَلَى مُحَمَّدٍ ﷺ»

“Whoever goes to a soothsayer and confirms what he says, has denied the Shariah revealed upon Muhammad ﷺ.”

Reference: (Sahih Muslim)

And He said:

«مَنْ أَتَى عَرَّافًا فَسَأَلَهُ، لَمْ تُقْبَلْ لَهُ صَلَاةٌ أَرْبَعِينَ لَيْلَةً»

“Whoever asks a fortune-teller, his prayer will not be accepted for forty days.”

Reference: (Sahih Muslim)

Supplication:

May Allah protect us from every evil, magic, evil eye, and satanic attack –
