Legitimacy and Necessity of Ghaybānī (Funeral in Absentia) Prayer Beyond Najāshī
Source: Aḥkām wa Masāʾil – Janāzah Issues, Vol. 1, p. 256
❖ Question
Apart from the funeral prayer in absentia (ṣalāt al-janāzah al-ghāʾib) for Najāshī (رضي الله عنه), are there any other narrations regarding ghaybānī funerals for the Companions or other Muslims?
❖ Answer
Al-ḥamdu lillāh, waṣ-ṣalātu wa-s-salāmu ʿalā Rasūlillāh, ammā baʿd:
- The ḥadīth regarding the funeral prayer in absentia for Najāshī (رضي الله عنه) is authentically established.
- This narration is recorded in both Ṣaḥīḥ al-Bukhārī and Ṣaḥīḥ Muslim, and from this very ḥadīth the legitimacy and permissibility of ghaybānī funeral prayer is derived.
❖ Principle of Legitimacy
- If the ḥadīth of Najāshī (رضي الله عنه) had not been authentic, or if its text did not clearly indicate the permissibility of ghaybānī janāzah, then there would be a need to provide other supporting narrations.
- However, since this ḥadīth is ṣaḥīḥ and explicit in proving the ruling, it alone suffices as evidence for the permissibility of this practice.
❖ Conclusion
- There is no need for further references from other Companions’ funerals, because the ḥadīth of Najāshī (رضي الله عنه) is itself sufficient to establish the validity and permissibility of the ghaybānī funeral prayer.
