Ruling on Raising Hands for Supplication After the Adhan
Source: Ahkam wa Masail in the Light of the Qur’an and Hadith, Vol. 01
Question:
A questioner asked Maulana Amritsari:
“Is it permissible to raise hands while making duʿāʾ after the Adhan?”
Answer:
Al-ḥamdu lillāh, waṣ-ṣalātu was-salāmu ʿalā Rasūlillāh, ʾammā baʿd:
Maulana Amritsari replied:
“Hazrat Mian Sahib Marhoom Dehlavi, based on two weak narrations, declared raising hands for supplication after Salah to be impermissible.”
Comment by Muhaddith Roopari (رحمه الله):
Regarding Maulana Amritsari’s reply, Muhaddith Roopari wrote:
- Maulana Amritsari’s answer in another publication remained incomplete.
- He did not present this issue in a clear manner and left the answer unfinished.
- If the intent was to compare this supplication (after Adhan) to the supplication after Salah, then the reasoning and basis of this analogy should have been clearly explained.
- However, Maulana Amritsari neither declared it “permissible” nor “impermissible,” but left the matter in between.
Muhaddith Roopari further wrote:
In this matter, it would have been sufficient to simply say:
“I have no knowledge of its evidence.”
Or, one could have deduced its permissibility from general Ahadith stating that:
“Supplication should be made with raised hands.”
