❖ Question
What do the honorable scholars say about this matter: A person named Chhattu passed away, leaving behind the following heirs:
◄ One wife
◄ Two brothers
◄ One sister
According to the Shariah of Muhammad ﷺ, how will the estate of the deceased be distributed among these heirs?
❖ Answer
Al-ḥamdu lillāh, waṣ-ṣalātu was-salāmu ʿalā Rasūlillāh, Ammā Baʿd!
It should be understood that from the estate of the deceased, first the expenses of funeral and burial will be deducted, then any debts will be paid off. After that, the remaining estate will be divided as follows:
▣ Division in the Old System (Ānā & Pāi)
◈ Wife: 4 ānā
◈ Each brother: 4 ānā 8 pāi
◈ Sister: 2 ānā 4 pāi
The remaining 4 pāi will be divided into five parts:
✿ Sister: 1 part
✿ Each brother: 2 parts
▣ Division in the Modern Decimal System (%)
If the total estate is considered 100 rupees, then the division will be:
✿ Wife: 25 rupees (i.e., 1/4 share)
✿ Two brothers: 60 rupees (30 each)
✿ Sister: 15 rupees
