Houris in Paradise: Addressing Misconceptions and Understanding the Reality
✍ Written by: Zeeshan Warraich
✦ Introduction to the Subject
Western thinkers, atheists, and certain local liberals commonly assert that Muslims engage in Jihad or suicide attacks in pursuit of “Houris” (maidens of Paradise). Such claims not only distort Islamic teachings but also misrepresent the motivations behind Muslim resistance.
✦ Key Points
✔ The mention of Houris in Paradise is clearly found in the Qur’an and Hadith, but it is often taken out of context to divert attention from the real issue.
✔ Advocates of Western imperialism employ tactics like red herring and straw man arguments to craft narratives against Islam and Muslims.
✦ Houris and the Mindset of the Atheist
❖ Houris in Qur’an and Hadith
The Qur’an and authentic narrations describe the characteristics of the wives in Paradise as follows:
① Ḥūr ʿĪn (with large eyes) — (Ar-Rahman: 72, Al-Waqi‘ah: 22)
② Pure like preserved pearls — (Al-Waqi‘ah: 23)
③ Beautiful like rubies and coral — (Ar-Rahman: 58)
④ Beloved and captivating — (Al-Waqi‘ah: 37)
⑤ Of equal age — (Al-Waqi‘ah: 37)
⑥ Pure spouses — (Aal-e-Imran: 15, An-Nisa: 57)
⑦ Modest in gaze — (Ar-Rahman: 56)
⑧ Exquisitely beautiful — (Ar-Rahman: 70)
⑨ Virgins — (Al-Waqi‘ah: 36)
⑩ A special creation of Allah — (Al-Waqi‘ah: 35)
✦ Western Objections
Opponents often reduce the broad and noble concept of Houris to the term “virgin,” attempting to confine the Islamic view of Paradise to mere sexual gratification. In reality, the Qur’an presents Houris as beloved, pure, and captivating companions, emphasizing all aspects of their charm and moral excellence.
✦ The Western Mindset
In Western culture, women are frequently treated as commercial objects, exploited in advertisements, pornography, and business ventures. As such, when they hear about Houris, they perceive them through this same materialistic and exploitative lens, projecting their own cultural biases onto Islamic concepts.
✦ Why Mention Houris?
❖ The Package of Paradise
Paradise includes countless blessings beyond Houris, such as:
✔ Gardens, rivers, palaces
✔ Delicious foods, refined drinks
✔ Freedom from illness and death
✔ The ultimate reward: The pleasure, greeting, and vision of Allah — (At-Tawbah: 72)
❖ Rewards in Accordance with Human Nature
Allah promises rewards that align with human nature. The mention of pure spouses is completely in harmony with natural human desires.
One must ask: Why is sexual pleasure only associated with immodest women or pornography? Is it not natural and just that righteous believers are rewarded with pure and noble companions?
✦ Reality Behind the Objection
This objection reflects a narrow mindset that mocks divine rewards instead of seeking to understand them. Had Houris not been mentioned, these same critics would have claimed that Islam ignores one of man’s basic needs.
✦ Why So Many Houris?
❖ On Their Number
The Qur’an does not specify a number regarding wives in Paradise. However, authentic Hadiths promise 72 Houris for the martyr.
In a narration from Tirmidhi reported by Miqdam ibn Ma‘dikarib, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said:
“The martyr will receive these rewards:
• Forgiveness at the first drop of blood
• A glimpse of his place in Paradise
• Protection from the torment of the grave and the terror of the Day of Judgment
• A crown of dignity, with a ruby more precious than the world and all it contains
• Marriage to 72 Houris
• Intercession for 70 relatives”
(Tirmidhi, Book of Virtues of Jihad, Hadith no. 1663; Musnad Ahmad: 17349)
✦ What About Women? Are Houris Only for Men?
❖ Equality Between Men and Women
There is no distinction in reward between men and women in Islam based on deeds. Allah states:
“Whoever does righteous deeds, male or female, while being a believer — We will surely grant them a good life and reward them according to the best of their deeds.”
(An-Nahl: 97)
❖ Rewards for Women
The Qur’an discusses male rewards in more explicit detail due to alignment with male nature. However, women are also promised whatever their hearts desire, as Allah says:
“And therein is for you whatever your souls desire and whatever delights your eyes.”
(Az-Zukhruf: 71)
✦ Does a Mujahid Blow Himself Up for Houris?
❖ Purpose of Jihad
In Islam, Jihad is performed for Allah’s pleasure and the establishment of His religion, not merely to attain the rewards of Paradise. Scholars differ on the permissibility of suicide attacks, and even where permissible, they must conform to the Shari‘ah.
❖ Martyrdom and Rewards
The reward of martyrdom is Paradise and Allah’s pleasure. The Houris are one of the many blessings of Paradise, not the ultimate objective.
A martyr sacrifices his life seeking divine forgiveness, Allah’s acceptance, and the elevation of religion, and as a part of Allah’s favor, he is granted extraordinary blessings.
✦ The Western Narrative
The claim that “Muslims commit suicide attacks just for Houris” is a false and prejudiced accusation. In Islam, the mention of Houris aligns with human nature and the principle of reward, and to distort it reflects a pathological mindset.
❖ Conclusion
The concept of Houris in Paradise is a divine promise that aligns with human nature and spiritual reward. Islam presents this idea with dignity and purpose, not with vulgarity. The Western misrepresentation of this concept reflects ignorance, bias, and a superficial understanding of Islamic theology.
