It is narrated from Abu Bakr bin Abdur Rahman (may Allah have mercy on him) that I and my father Abdur Rahman (may Allah be pleased with him) were with the governor of Madinah, Marwan bin Hakam (may Allah have mercy on him), when it was mentioned to him that Sayyiduna Abu Hurairah (may Allah be pleased with him) says: Whoever wakes up in a state of major impurity (janabah) should not fast that day, rather he should break his fast. So Marwan (may Allah have mercy on him) said: O Abdur Rahman! I swear to you, go and ask the Mothers of the Believers, Sayyidah Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) and Sayyidah Umm Salamah (may Allah be pleased with her), about this issue and come back. Abu Bakr (may Allah have mercy on him) says: I also went with Abdur Rahman. When we entered the chamber of Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her), we greeted her, then Abdur Rahman asked: O Mother of the Believers! We were with Marwan when he was told that Sayyiduna Abu Hurairah (may Allah be pleased with him) gives the fatwa that whoever does not perform ghusl by suhoor and wakes up in a state of janabah should break his fast that day (i.e., he cannot fast in a state of janabah). Sayyidah Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) said: The issue is not at all as Sayyiduna Abu Hurairah (may Allah be pleased with him) has stated. O Abdur Rahman! Will you abandon the way of the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ)? Abdur Rahman said: No, by Allah! She then said: I bear witness that the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) would become junub not due to a wet dream but due to intercourse, and then he would fast that day. Abu Bakr (may Allah have mercy on him) says: Then we went to Sayyidah Umm Salamah (may Allah be pleased with her), greeted her, and asked her the same issue, and her answer was the same as that of Sayyidah Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her). We left from there and went to Marwan, and Abdur Rahman informed him of both their answers. Then Marwan again swore and said: O Abu Muhammad! My mount is at the door, ride it and go to Sayyiduna Abu Hurairah (may Allah be pleased with him), he is at his land in Aqiq (at that time), and definitely inform him of the issue. Abu Bakr (may Allah have mercy on him) says: Sayyiduna Abdur Rahman mounted, and I also went with him until we reached Sayyiduna Abu Hurairah (may Allah be pleased with him). Abdur Rahman talked with him for a while, then mentioned the issue to him. Sayyiduna Abu Hurairah (may Allah be pleased with him) said: I do not know this (from myself); someone had informed me in this way.
