Imam al-Shafi'i (may Allah have mercy on him) said: "Because the obligatory prayer is more binding upon him than all the voluntary prayers."

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Allah Almighty says: Whoever shows enmity to a friend (wali) of Mine has challenged Me to war. My servant does not draw near to Me with anything more beloved to Me than what I have made obligatory upon him, and My servant continues to draw near to Me through voluntary deeds until I love him. When I love him, I become his hearing with which he hears, his sight with which he sees, his hand with which he grasps, and his foot with which he walks. If My servant asks of Me, I give to him, and if he seeks refuge with Me, I grant him refuge. I have never hesitated in anything I am to do as I hesitate in taking the soul of the believer: he dislikes death, and I dislike hurting him."
