Humayd bin Abd al-Rahman narrates from his mother, Umm Kulthum bint Uqbah (may Allah be pleased with her), who was among the early Emigrants, that she said: I heard the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) saying: "The one who reconciles between people is not a liar; he says something good."

Humayd bin Abd al-Rahman bin Awf (may Allah have mercy on him) said that his mother, Umm Kulthum bint Uqbah (may Allah be pleased with her), informed him that she heard the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) saying: "The man who spreads good or speaks good is not a liar." And she stated that permission to lie is given only on three occasions: 1. in war, 2. in reconciling between people, 3. a wife's (speech) to her husband and a husband's to his wife. Umm Kulthum (may Allah be pleased with her) was among the early Emigrants who pledged allegiance to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him).

Humayd bin Abd al-Rahman (may Allah have mercy on him) narrates from his mother, Umm Kulthum bint Uqbah (may Allah be pleased with her), that she said: I heard the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him); he (peace and blessings be upon him) permitted lying only on three occasions, and he used to say: "I do not count him a liar: 1. one who reconciles between people, intending nothing but reconciliation; 2. on the occasion of war; 3. a wife saying something to her husband, or a husband to his wife."

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Sayyiduna Ibrahim (peace be upon him) told only three lies: 1: Regarding their gods, he said: 'Rather, this largest of them did it.' [Al-Anbiya: 63] 2: When they invited him (to go) to their gods, he said: 'Indeed, I am ill.' [Al-Saffat: 89] 3: He called Sayyidah Sarah (may Allah be pleased with her) his sister."
This hadith is established. His saying: 'Rather, this largest of them did it.' [Al-Anbiya: 63] was said by way of rebuke and to make clear that their gods could not make anything. (And 'Indeed, I am ill.' [Al-Saffat: 89] means that he would soon become ill; and when he called Sayyidah Sarah (may Allah be pleased with her) his sister, it was the bond of Islam.) And Allah knows best.
