Sayyiduna Abu Humayd al-Sa'idi (may Allah be pleased with him) said that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) appointed a man as a collector of charity. When he came after finishing his work, he said: "O Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), this is for you, and this was given to me as a gift." He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Had you stayed in the house of your mother or father, would you have been given a gift?" Then the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) sat on the pulpit in the evening after the prayer and praised and glorified Allah. He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "What is the matter with the collectors, that they come to us and say: 'This is yours, and these are our gifts'? Had he stayed in the house of his mother and father, then he would see whether he receives gifts or not. By Allah! Whoever accepts anything in this way will bring it on his neck on the Day of Resurrection. If it is a camel, he will bring it and it will be grumbling. If it is a cow, he will bring it and it will be lowing. If it is a goat, he will bring it and it will be bleating. I have conveyed the message." Then the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) raised his hands until the whiteness of his armpits could be seen.
Zayd bin Thabit (may Allah be pleased with him) also heard this along with me.

Sayyiduna Adi bin Amirah (may Allah be pleased with him) said: I heard the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) say: "O people! Whoever does any work for us and then conceals even a needle, he will bring it on the Day of Resurrection." A man of the Ansar spoke, as if I can see him now; he said: "O Messenger of Allah! Take back your work from me." He (peace and blessings be upon him) asked: "What is the matter with you?" He said: "I heard you say this." He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "I say it even now: whoever is made a collector, let him bring everything, little or much; then whatever he is given from it he may take, and whatever he is forbidden he must refrain from."

Abu Hariz said that a man used to give Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) the thigh of a camel as a gift every year. Then he came with a dispute to Sayyiduna Umar bin al-Khattab (may Allah be pleased with him) and said: "O Commander of the Faithful! Judge between us, as the thigh of a camel is separated from the camel." So Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) wrote to his governors: "Do not accept gifts, for they are a bribe."

Imam Malik (may Allah have mercy on him) said: A man from among the Companions of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), who was one of the governors of Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him), gave two cushions as a gift to the wife of Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him). Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) came in, saw them and asked: "Where did you get these two from? Did you buy them? Tell me, and do not lie to me." She said: "So-and-so sent them to me." He (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "May Allah destroy so-and-so! When he wants something and cannot get it through me, he comes to me through my family." Then he (may Allah be pleased with him) pulled them out forcefully from under those who were sitting on them and went out carrying them. Her slave girl followed him and said: "Their wool is ours." So he ripped them open, threw the wool to her and went out with them. He gave one of them to a woman of the Muhajirun and the other to a woman of the Ansar.
