Sayyiduna Abd al-Rahman bin Samurah (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "O Abd al-Rahman! Do not ask for leadership, for if leadership is given to you because you asked for it, you will be left to it; but if it is given to you without asking, you will be helped by Allah. And when you swear an oath about something and something else is better than it, do that and give the expiation for your oath."

Zahdam al-Jarmi (may Allah have mercy on him) said: There was brotherhood between us and the Ash'aris. We were with Sayyiduna Abu Musa (may Allah be pleased with him), and he served chicken meat in the food. Among the people was a red-complexioned man resembling the freed slaves, from the tribe of Taym Allah. Sayyiduna Abu Musa (may Allah be pleased with him) said: Come closer and eat. He said: I saw it eating filth, so I swore that I would not eat it. He said: Come closer and eat, for I saw the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) eating this meat. Then he related that he came to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) with a group of the Ash'aris seeking mounts. He (peace and blessings be upon him) was distributing camels of charity. I said: O Messenger of Allah! Give us mounts too. He (peace and blessings be upon him) was angry at that time, and he said: "I will not give you mounts, nor do I have any, by Allah!" Then camels with high white humps were brought to him (peace and blessings be upon him), and he (peace and blessings be upon him) gave us five camels. I said: We made the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) unmindful, that is, (he (peace and blessings be upon him)) forgot his oath; we will never succeed. We came to him (peace and blessings be upon him) and said: O Prophet of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him)! You had sworn not to give us mounts. He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Allah has given you mounts; I did not provide you with mounts. But when I swear an oath about something and something else is better than it, I do that, give the expiation for my oath, and release myself from my oath."
