Sayyidah Zaynab (may Allah be pleased with her) says that Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) heard the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) say: "Ruqyah, amulets (tama'im) and love charms (tiwalah) are shirk." She said: I asked: Why do you say this? By Allah! My eyes used to ache, and I would have a certain Jew perform ruqyah over me; when he performed ruqyah over me, I would get relief. Sayyiduna Abdullah (may Allah be pleased with him) said: That was the work of Satan; he would prod it with his hand, and when ruqyah was performed he would stop. It would be enough for you to say as the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) used to say: 'Adhhib al-ba's, Rabb al-nas, ishfi wa anta al-shafi, la shifa'a illa shifa'uk, shifa'an la yughadiru saqama' (Remove the affliction, O Lord of mankind; heal, for You are the Healer; there is no healing but Your healing, a healing that leaves no illness behind).

The Shaykh said: (This applies to one who) regards it as the cause of complete well-being and the removal of illness, as was done in the time of ignorance (Jahiliyyah). But if it is only for seeking blessing, and he relies on Allah alone for the removal of illness, then it is permissible.
