Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) says: Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) sent me at Mina on the Day of Sacrifice to announce: "After this year no polytheist shall come for Hajj, and no one shall circumambulate the House naked." And the Day of the Greater Hajj is the Day of Sacrifice; and it is said that it was called the Greater Hajj because people call Umrah the Lesser Hajj. Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) had it announced that a polytheist who performed Hajj this year should not perform Hajj the following year with the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). And in the year of Abu Bakr's (may Allah be pleased with him) announcement, Allah Almighty revealed this verse: "O you who believe! The polytheists are impure, so let them not come near al-Masjid al-Haram after this year." [Surah al-Tawbah: 28]

Zayd bin Yuthay' narrates from Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) that he said: I was sent to the people of Makkah with four things: "No one shall circumambulate the House naked; after this year no polytheist shall come near al-Masjid al-Haram; none shall enter Paradise except a believer; and any covenant made by the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) shall be honoured until its term."

Zayd bin Yuthay' relates: We asked Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him): "With what were you sent?" He said: "With four things," and he mentioned them. Then he said: "A Muslim and a polytheist shall not come together in Hajj after this year, and whoever has no covenant is given four months."
