Masruq narrates from Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) that he was asked about the souls of the martyrs, and he said: We too asked about that: "Their souls are like green birds; they have lamps hanging from the Throne. They fly about wherever they wish, then return to those lamps. Allah Almighty turns towards them and asks: Do you want anything? They say: What could we want, when we fly about wherever we wish in Paradise? When they realise that they will keep being asked, they say: O Lord! We wish that You return our souls to our bodies so that we may be killed in Your path once more. When Allah Almighty sees that they have no need, they are left as they are." (b) In al-Muqri's narration: We asked Abdullah bin Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) about this verse: "Do not think of those who have been killed in the path of Allah as dead; rather, they are alive with their Lord, receiving provision, rejoicing." [Surah Al Imran: 169-170] He said: We too asked about that.

Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) said that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "When your brothers were martyred on the day of Uhud, Allah placed their souls inside green birds, which fly about over the rivers of Paradise and eat of its fruits; beneath the Throne, lanterns of gold are hung for them, in which they dwell. When they found such food and drink and such a fine resting place, they said: 'Who will convey our message to our brothers, that we are alive in Paradise and are given provision, so that they do not lose their desire for jihad and do not show cowardice at the time of battle?' Allah, the Lord of Might, said: 'I will convey your message to them.'" Allah says: "Do not think of those who have been killed in the way of Allah as dead; rather, they are alive with their Lord, receiving provision." [Surah Al Imran: 169]

Sayyiduna Utbah bin Abd al-Sulami (may Allah be pleased with him) said that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Those who are killed are of three kinds: a man who goes out with his life and his wealth against the enemy and is martyred while fighting; Allah grants this man a place beneath the Throne, and the prophets are above him by one degree, because of prophethood. And a man who, after committing sins, fights the enemy on the battlefield of jihad and is martyred; this martyrdom wipes out his sins and his mistakes, for the sword is an eraser of mistakes, and it will be said to such a man: 'Enter by whichever of the eight gates of Paradise you wish.' Paradise has eight gates and Hell has seven, and the gates of Paradise are superior to one another. And a hypocrite who is killed while fighting on the battlefield of jihad with his wealth and his life; he is of the people of Hell, for the sword does not erase hypocrisy."
