Sayyiduna Jabir (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) the story of the Farewell Hajj, that he (peace and blessings be upon him) said in his sermon: "Beware! Everything of the affairs of the Jahiliyyah has been placed beneath my feet, and all the blood (claims) of the Jahiliyyah are abolished. The first blood among our own blood that I abolish is the blood of Rabi'ah bin al-Harith, that is, Ibn Abd al-Muttalib. He was being nursed among Banu Sa'd when Hudhayl killed him."

Sayyiduna Abu Shurayh al-Khuza'i (may Allah be pleased with him) says that on the day of the Conquest of Makkah the Companions (may Allah be pleased with them) met a man from Hudhayl, in the Sanctuary, whom they had been pursuing for a blood-revenge from the Jahiliyyah. That man was heading to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) to pledge allegiance to him on Islam, but they killed him. When the news reached the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), he (peace and blessings be upon him) became angry. Banu Bakr hurried to Sayyiduna Abu Bakr and Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both), seeking their intercession with the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him). When evening came, the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) addressed the people, praised Allah Almighty, and then said: "Allah Almighty has made Makkah sacred. He did not make it lawful for the people (or he said: it was not the people who made it sacred). It was made lawful only for me for an hour of a day; then Allah Almighty made it sacred again as before. The most transgressing of people against Allah are three: 1. a man who kills in the Sanctuary, 2. a man who kills someone other than his killer, 3. a man who seeks blood-revenge of the Jahiliyyah. By Allah, I shall pay the blood money for this man whom you have killed." Sayyiduna Abu Shurayh (may Allah be pleased with him) says: Then the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) paid his blood money.

Sayyiduna Amr bin al-As (may Allah be pleased with him), narrating the story of his acceptance of Islam, says: I stepped forward and said: O Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him)! I will pledge allegiance to you (peace and blessings be upon him) on the condition that my past sins are forgiven, and I did not mention the later ones. He (peace and blessings be upon him) said to me: "O Amr! Pledge allegiance, for Islam wipes out all the sins before it, and through Hijrah too the sins before it are forgiven." So I pledged allegiance to him.

Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) says that a man said: O Messenger of Allah! Will we be held to account for the deeds we did in the Jahiliyyah? He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Whoever does well in Islam will not be held to account for his deeds of the Jahiliyyah, and whoever does not do well in Islam will be held to account for both his earlier and his later deeds."

Sayyiduna Abdullah (may Allah be pleased with him) says that a man came to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) and said: "O Messenger of Allah! Will we be held to account for our deeds of the Jahiliyyah?" He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Whoever does good deeds in Islam will not be held to account for his deeds of the Jahiliyyah, and whoever does evil will be held to account for all his deeds, the first and the last."
By this he (peace and blessings be upon him) meant only the Hereafter; it is as though he made faith an expiation for his past disbelief, and made righteous deeds afterwards an expiation for all his past sins other than his disbelief.

Sayyiduna Hakim bin Hizam (may Allah be pleased with him) says that I said: "O Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him)! What is your (peace and blessings be upon him) view about deeds such as freeing slaves and maintaining ties of kinship that I did in the Jahiliyyah; will I receive reward for them?" The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "You have accepted Islam, and the good you did remains for you."
