Muhammad bin Ishaq bin Yasar said: When the affair of the Trench and of Banu Qurayzah was over, Abu Rafi' Sallam bin Abi al-Huqayq, who had assembled the confederate armies against the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him): the people of al-Khazraj sought permission to kill Sallam bin Abi al-Huqayq. He was in Khaybar at that time, and he (peace and blessings be upon him) gave them permission. Then the campaign of Banu al-Mustaliq took place in Sha'ban, 6 AH. Then, in Dhu al-Qa'dah of the year of Hudaybiyah, he (peace and blessings be upon him) set out to perform Umrah.
Al-Shaykh said: After that came his (peace and blessings be upon him) Umrat al-Qada', then the one from al-Ji'ranah, then the Umrah he (peace and blessings be upon him) performed with his Hajj, and Ibn Abi al-Huqayq had been killed before them.
So how can his prohibition of killing women and children in the story of Ibn Abi al-Huqayq abrogate the hadith of al-Sa'b bin Jaththamah (may Allah be pleased with him), which came after it? They claim that he emigrated to him (peace and blessings be upon him) and died during the caliphate of Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him). If he heard it from him (peace and blessings be upon him) after emigrating, that too is after the story of Ibn Abi al-Huqayq, for the hadith of the gift shows that this was his first meeting with the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). So the way to reconcile the two hadiths is what Imam al-Shafi'i (may Allah have mercy on him) pointed to: the two situations are different. And Allah knows best.

Iyas bin Salamah (may Allah have mercy on him) narrates from his father, Sayyiduna Salamah (may Allah be pleased with him), that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) appointed Sayyiduna Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) as our commander in a campaign against the polytheists. We attacked them at night and killed them, and our watchword that night was 'Amit, amit' (Kill, kill). Sayyiduna Salamah (may Allah be pleased with him) said: That night I killed with my own hand the members of seven households of the polytheists.

Sayyiduna Anas bin Malik (may Allah be pleased with him) said: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) came to Khaybar and arrived at night. Whenever he (peace and blessings be upon him) came to a people at night, he would not attack before morning. When morning came, the Jews came out with their farming tools, and when they saw his (peace and blessings be upon him) army, they said: "By Allah! Muhammad and his army!" He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Allah is the Greatest! Khaybar is ruined, that is, its inhabitants. Sayyiduna Anas (may Allah be pleased with him) said: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) reached Khaybar at night, but whenever the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) came to a people at night, he would not attack before morning. If he (peace and blessings be upon him) heard the call to prayer, he would hold back from attacking; and if they did not pray, he would attack them in the morning. When morning came, he (peace and blessings be upon him) and the Muslims mounted. The people of the town came out with their farming tools. When they saw the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), they said: Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) and the army! Imam al-Shafi'i (may Allah have mercy on him), commenting on the narration of Sayyiduna Anas (may Allah be pleased with him), said: The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) would not attack before morning, yet attacking at any time of day or night is permissible, not forbidden, and an attack may also be made while the enemy is unaware. Rather, he (peace and blessings be upon him) did this as a precaution, so that those with him could see how they were attacking and would not be struck from an ambush or from where they did not perceive; and he would not attack at night lest the Muslims end up killing one another, as happened in the killing carried out by Ibn Atik, when they cut the leg of one of their own companions.
Imam al-Shafi'i (may Allah have mercy on him) said: The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) commanded the Companions (may Allah be pleased with them) to raid several of the Jews, such as Abu Rafi' Abdullah bin Abi al-Huqayq, who was also called Sallam bin Abi al-Huqayq.

Sayyiduna al-Bara' (may Allah be pleased with him) said: The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) assigned a group of the Ansar to deal with Abu Rafi' the Jew, who lived in the Hijaz, and their commander was Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Atik (may Allah be pleased with him). Abu Rafi' used to harm the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and help others against him (peace and blessings be upon him). His fortress was in the Hijaz. When this group of Companions drew near to it, the sun was about to set and the people were taking their livestock home. Abdullah (may Allah be pleased with him) said to his companions: "Stay where you are. I will go and find out about the gate; perhaps I can get inside and kill him." When he came near the gate, he wrapped himself in his garment like someone relieving himself. The people had entered the fortress, and the gatekeeper called out: "O servant of Allah! If you want to come in, come in, for I want to close the gate." The narrator said: I too went in. When all the people had entered, he closed the gate and hung the keys on a peg. Abdullah (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "I took the keys and opened the gate. Storytellers used to sit with Abu Rafi' at night. When those who talked with him at night had left, I climbed up to Abu Rafi'. Whenever I opened a door, I closed it behind me from the inside. I said (to myself): Let the people leave me alone until I have killed him. When I reached him, he was in a dark room in the midst of his family. I did not know where in the room he was, so I said: Abu Rafi'! He said: Who is this? I moved toward the voice and struck a blow, but it was of no use; I was flustered and achieved nothing. He screamed. I went out of the room but did not go far. Then I came back and asked: O Abu Rafi', what was that noise? He said: Woe to your mother! There is a man in the room who is striking me with a sword." Abdullah (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "I struck him a second time but could not kill him. Then I placed the point of the sword in his belly and pressed down on it until I heard it come out the other side, and I knew that I had killed him. Then I opened the doors one by one until I reached the stairs. I put my foot down, thinking that I had reached the ground, and I fell on that moonlit night and my leg broke, so I bound it with my turban. Then I went out and sat by the gate. I said: By Allah! I will not leave until I know whether or not I have killed him. When the rooster crowed, a man announcing a death stood on the wall and said: I announce the death of Abu Rafi'. I hurried to my companions and said: Allah has destroyed Abu Rafi'. I came to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) and told him. He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: 'Stretch out your leg.' I stretched it out, and he (peace and blessings be upon him) passed his blessed hand over it, and it felt as though I had never had any pain at all."

Sayyiduna al-Bara' (may Allah be pleased with him) said: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) sent some men of the Ansar to Abu Rafi' and appointed Sayyiduna Abdullah (may Allah be pleased with him) as their commander. He mentioned the hadith in the same way, except that he said: I went along and stayed close to the gatekeeper; then I went in and hid. When the people had entered, he closed the gate and hung the keys on a peg.
