Imam al-Shafi'i (may Allah have mercy on him) said: "The one leading the animal from the front, the one driving it from behind, and the one riding it will be liable for the damage the animal causes with its hand (foreleg), mouth, foot or tail." And he cited the hadith of Sayyiduna al-Bara' bin Azib (may Allah be pleased with him) as evidence for this.

Sayyiduna Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him): "The injury of the foot is of no account."
Imam al-Shafi'i said: As for what is narrated from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) that "the foot is of no account", it is a mistake, and Allah knows best, because the hafiz narrators did not preserve it this way.
The Shaykh said: Only Sufyan bin Husayn narrated this addition from al-Zuhri; Malik bin Anas, al-Layth bin Sa'd, Ibn Jurayj, Ma'mar, Uqayl, Sufyan bin Uyaynah and others narrated it from al-Zuhri, and none of them mentioned the foot in it.

Imam al-Daraqutni (may Allah have mercy on him) says that no one corroborated Sufyan bin Husayn in his statement about the injury of the foot being of no account. He erred, because the trustworthy narrators contradicted him and did not mention it.

Sayyiduna Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) says that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Injury caused by an animal is of no account, the foot is of no account, and injury in a well and while extracting minerals is of no account, and in buried treasure (rikaz) there is one fifth."
Abu al-Hasan al-Daraqutni said: This is how he narrated it, and it is a mistake; no one corroborated him on it from Shu'bah.
The Shaykh said: This hadith was narrated from Shu'bah by Muhammad bin Ja'far Ghundar, who is the authority on the hadith of Shu'bah, and by Mu'adh bin Mu'adh al-Anbari, Muslim bin Ibrahim, Abu Umar al-Hawdi and others, without this addition. Likewise al-Rabi' bin Muslim narrated it from Muhammad bin Ziyad without this addition.

Hudhayl bin Shurahbil said: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "(Injury caused in) a mine is unavenged (no compensation is due), a well is unavenged, a grazing animal is unavenged, the foot (of a riding animal) is unavenged, and in buried treasure (rikaz) there is one-fifth." This is the wording of al-Thawri's narration. In the narration of al-A'mash: "The animal is unavenged, the well is unavenged, the mine is unavenged, the foot is unavenged, and in buried treasure there is one-fifth."
This is mursal; no proof is established by it. Qays bin al-Rabi' narrated it as connected (mawsul), mentioning Abdullah bin Mas'ud in it, and Qays is not used as proof.

Sayyiduna Nu'man bin Bashir (may Allah be pleased with him) said that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Whoever stations his animal on one of the roads of the Muslims or in their markets, and it tramples (someone) with a fore-leg or a hind-leg, he is liable for it."
Abu Jazi and al-Sari bin Isma'il are both da'if (weak).
