Urwah bin al-Zubayr (may Allah have mercy on him) said: When Sayyiduna Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) dispatched Sayyiduna Khalid bin al-Walid (may Allah be pleased with him) against the apostates, he sent the bulk of the people with him, and Sayyiduna Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) went out with him until he halted at Dhu al-Qassah, which is 2 barid from Madinah. There he arrayed his armies and gave him his instructions. He appointed Sayyiduna Thabit bin Qays bin Shammas (may Allah be pleased with him) as commander over the Ansar, placing him under Khalid, and appointed Sayyiduna Khalid bin al-Walid (may Allah be pleased with him) as commander over the whole body of people from the Muhajirun and the Arab tribes. Then he ordered him to head first for Tulayhah bin Khuwaylid al-Asadi, and when he was done with him, to head for the land of Banu Tamim until he was done with what was there. He told him this in confidence, while making it appear that he would join Khalid near Khaybar with the people who remained with him; he did not intend that, but showed it only as a stratagem. Sayyiduna Khalid bin al-Walid (may Allah be pleased with him) went on until he and Tulayhah met on the day of Buzakhah, at one of the waters of Banu Asad called Qatan. With Tulayhah was Uyaynah bin Badr with 700 men of Banu Fazarah. Whenever the fighting pressed him hard, he would come to Tulayhah and say: May you have no father! Has Jibril come to you yet? He would say: No, by Allah. He would say: What is keeping him? By Allah, we are exhausted. Then once he came and asked him, and he said: Yes, he has come to me, and he said: "You will have a millstone like his, and an event you will not forget." Uyaynah said: I think Allah knows that there will indeed be an event you will not forget. O Banu Fazarah, by Allah, this man is a liar; so go about your own business.
The Shaykh said: We have narrated in the Book of Fighting the Rebels, from al-Zuhri, that Tulayhah killed Ukkashah bin Mihsan and Thabit bin Aqram on this occasion, then accepted Islam when the truth prevailed, entered ihram for Umrah and passed by Sayyiduna Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) in Madinah; and it has not reached us that he exacted retaliation from him or obliged him to pay blood money.

Muhammad bin Musa bin Muhammad al-Taymi narrates from his father that when the rout occurred in Tulayhah's army, Tulayhah fled to Syria. When he came back to Makkah during the caliphate of Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him), Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "O Tulayhah! You killed two righteous men, Ukkashah bin Mihsan and Thabit bin Aqram (may Allah be pleased with them both), so I do not love you." He replied: "O Umar! Allah honoured the two of them by my hands and spared me from being disgraced by their hands. Not all houses are built on love; but there is the handshake, which even two enemies exchange." After that Tulayhah (may Allah be pleased with him) became a good Muslim.

Tariq bin Shihab said: A delegation of Buzakhah, from Asad and Ghatafan, came to Sayyiduna Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) seeking peace. Sayyiduna Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) gave them a choice between a war of expulsion and a humiliating peace. They said: The war of expulsion we know; what is the humiliating peace? He (may Allah be pleased with him) said: You will hand over your weapons and your horses, and you will be left as people who follow the tails of camels, until Allah shows the Caliph of His Prophet and the Muslims something on account of which they can excuse you. You will pay blood money for our slain, while we will not pay blood money for your slain; our slain are in Paradise and your slain are in the Fire. You will return whatever you took from us, and whatever we took from you is our spoils. Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) said: You have given an opinion, and we will advise you. As for their handing over weapons and horses, excellent is your opinion; as for their being left as people who follow the tails of camels until Allah shows the Caliph of His Prophet and the Muslims something on account of which they can excuse them, excellent is your opinion; as for our keeping as spoils what we took from them while they return what they took from us, excellent is your opinion; as for their slain being in the Fire and ours in Paradise, excellent is your opinion; but as for their paying blood money for our slain, no: our slain were killed upon the command of Allah, so there is no blood money for them. And the people agreed upon that.
