Tariq bin Shihab (may Allah be pleased with him) says: A delegation of Asad and Ghatafan came to Sayyiduna Abu Bakr al-Siddiq (may Allah be pleased with him) seeking peace. Sayyiduna Abu Bakr al-Siddiq (may Allah be pleased with him) told them: Either there is war, or else make peace in humiliation (and pay blood money).

Asim bin Damrah said that when Alqamah bin Ulathah apostatised after the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), he refused to submit as one defeated. So Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) said: Either submit in humiliation, or it is war. He asked: What is submitting in humiliation? He said: That you bear witness that our martyrs are in Paradise and yours are in Hell, and that you pay blood money for our slain while we do not pay blood money for your slain. So they accepted this.
