Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) says that Uyaynah bin Hisn bin Hudhayfah bin Badr came and stayed with his nephew al-Hurr bin Qays bin Hisn, who was one of those close to Sayyiduna Umar bin al-Khattab (may Allah be pleased with him); he was among the Qurra' (reciters) and among the people of his gatherings. Uyaynah said to his nephew: O my nephew! Do you have any access to this ruler, so that you could seek permission for me (to see him)? He said: I will certainly get you permission. So Sayyiduna al-Hurr (may Allah be pleased with him) obtained permission for Uyaynah from Sayyiduna Umar bin al-Khattab (may Allah be pleased with him). He went in and began saying to Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him): O Umar! You neither give us (enough), nor do you judge between us with justice. Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) became angry and was about to punish him, when Sayyiduna al-Hurr (may Allah be pleased with him) said: O Commander of the Believers! This man is ignorant, and Allah Almighty has said in His Qur'an: "Take to forgiveness, enjoin what is good, and turn away from the ignorant" [Surah Al-A'raf: 199]. When Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) heard this verse he stopped at once, for he adhered closely to the Qur'an. And in Kitab al-Zakah there is also a narration from Sayyiduna Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him): "Charity does not decrease wealth, forgiveness increases honour, and whoever humbles himself for the sake of Allah, Allah raises him in rank."
