Ali bin Abi Talhah narrates from Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) concerning this saying of Allah Almighty: "And their husbands have more right to take them back in that (period), if they intend reconciliation" [Surah al-Baqarah: 228], that when a husband gives his pregnant wife one or two divorces, he has the right to take her back as long as she has not given birth, and it is not proper for the woman to conceal her pregnancy. Allah Almighty says: "And it is not lawful for them to conceal what Allah has created in their wombs" [Surah al-Baqarah: 228]. [Da'if]

Sayyiduna Abdullah (may Allah be pleased with him) explains this saying: "Divorce is twice" [Surah al-Baqarah: 229]: This is the period in which the woman may be taken back. When he gives one or two divorces, then either he retains her and takes her back in a good manner, or he remains silent about her until her iddah ends, and then the woman has more right over herself. Ibn Ishaq says: A man would divorce his wife and then take her back before the iddah ended; there was no limit to divorce. Then a man from the Ansar divorced his wife, as their life together was not good. He said: I will leave you neither unmarried nor with a husband. He would divorce her, and when the end of her iddah drew near, he would take her back. So Allah revealed this verse. Hisham bin Urwah narrates from his father that Sayyidah Aishah (may Allah be pleased with her) said: "Divorce is twice; then (either) retaining in a good manner or releasing with kindness" [Surah al-Baqarah: 229]. So three divorces were fixed for them: after one or two there is taking back, and after the third, taking back is not valid. Allah's saying: "When you divorce women, divorce them for their iddah, and count the iddah, and fear Allah" up to His saying "a clear immorality" [Surah al-Talaq: 1]. And the hadith of Rukanah about taking back has already passed.

Nafi' narrates from Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) that he divorced his wife while she was menstruating. Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) asked the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), and he (peace and blessings be upon him) ordered him to take her back, and said: "Then let him give her time until another menstruation, then give her time until she becomes pure, and then divorce her before having intercourse." And he said: "This is the time for which Allah has commanded that women be divorced." Whenever Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) was asked about a divorce given to a woman while she was menstruating, he would say: "If you gave one or two divorces, the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) ordered him to take her back, then to give her time until another menstruation, and then divorce (her) in purity without having had intercourse. But if you gave three divorces, then you have disobeyed the command Allah gave you concerning women, and the woman has become separated from you."
