Ibrahim bin Sa'd (may Allah have mercy on him) asked Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) about a woman whose husband divorced her twice and who then took khul' from her husband: may the husband marry her? Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) said: Allah mentioned divorce at the beginning of the verse and at its end, and khul' is mentioned in between; so khul' is not divorce, and he may marry her.
(b) Amr (may Allah have mercy on him) narrates from Ikrimah (may Allah have mercy on him): Everything that is made permissible through wealth is not divorce.

Umm Bakrah al-Aslamiyyah (may Allah be pleased with her) took khul' from her husband Abdullah bin Usayd (may Allah be pleased with him). Then they came to Uthman (may Allah be pleased with him), and he said: "It is one divorce, unless you named something, in which case it is what you named."
A musnad (connected) hadith has been narrated on this, but its chain is not established. It has also been narrated from Ali and Ibn Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with them both). Ibn al-Mundhir said: Ahmad bin Hanbal declared the report of Uthman weak, and the chains of the reports of Ali and Ibn Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with them both) have been criticised; there is nothing in this chapter more sound than the report of Ibn Abbas, meaning the report of Tawus from Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both).

Ikrimah (may Allah have mercy on him) narrates from Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) "counted khul' as an irrevocable divorce (talaq ba'in)".
Abbad bin Kathir al-Basri alone narrated it; Ahmad bin Hanbal, Yahya bin Ma'in and al-Bukhari declared him da'if (weak), and Shu'bah bin al-Hajjaj criticised him. How can it be sound when the view of Ibn Abbas and Ikrimah is contrary to it? Moreover, it may be meant for when he intends divorce by it or mentions it, the purpose being to cut off the right to take her back; and Allah knows best.
