Sayyiduna Abdullah (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) cursed "the woman who does tattooing (filling the skin with kohl) and the woman who has it done, and the woman who attaches false hair to her head and the woman who has it attached."

Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "May Allah curse the women who tattoo and those who have themselves tattooed, those who pluck the hair of their eyebrows and cheeks, those who file their teeth thin for beauty, and those who alter the creation of Allah." News of this reached a woman of the tribe of Banu Asad called Umm Ya'qub, who used to recite the Qur'an. She came to Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) and said: A hadith has reached me from you that you curse the women who tattoo and those who have themselves tattooed, those who pluck their eyebrows, those who file their teeth thin for beauty, and those who alter the creation of Allah. Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) said: Why should I not curse the one whom the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) cursed, and who is cursed in the Book of Allah? The woman said: I have read everything between the two covers, that is, the whole Qur'an, and I did not find in it what you are saying. Sayyiduna Ibn Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) explained: Had you read the Qur'an, you would have found this ruling in it, for Allah, the Lord of Might, says: "Whatever the Messenger gives you, take it, and whatever he forbids you, refrain from it." [Surah al-Hashr: 7] The woman replied: I have seen some of these things on your wife. He said: Go and look. So she went and looked, and found nothing. She said: I did not see anything. Sayyiduna Abdullah (may Allah be pleased with him) said: Had she been like that, we would never have been intimate with her.

Abu Dawud (may Allah have mercy on him) said: 'al-wasilah' is "the woman who joins other hair to women's hair"; 'al-mustawsilah' is "the one who has hair attached"; 'al-namisah' is "the one who thins the eyebrows"; and 'al-mutanammisah' is "the one who has her eyebrow hair thinned". 'Al-washimah' is "a woman who fills moles on her face with kohl or ink", and 'al-mustawshimah' is "the one who has moles filled in".
Al-Farra' (may Allah have mercy on him) said: 'al-namisah' is "the one who plucks hair from the face", and 'al-minmas' (tweezers) is "that with which she plucks the hair".

Abu Ubayd (may Allah have mercy on him) said: A woman would prick the back of her hand or her wrist with a needle, making a wound, and then fill it with kohl or powder, and it would turn green.
'Al-taflij' is to make the teeth thin and sharpen them so that their edges become thin, as they are in youth. An old woman does this to resemble young girls. This is the meaning of the words of Abu Ubaydah (may Allah have mercy on him) and Abu Ubayd (may Allah have mercy on him).
