Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) says: I was sitting with the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) when a man came and said that he intended to marry a woman of the Ansar. He (peace and blessings be upon him) asked him: "Have you seen her?" He said: "No." So he (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Go and look at her, for there is something in the eyes of the Ansar women."

Sayyiduna al-Mughirah bin Shu'bah (may Allah be pleased with him) says: I sent a marriage proposal to a woman and mentioned this to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Have you seen her?" I said: "No." So he (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Go and look at her, for that is more likely to create love between you." Sayyiduna al-Mughirah (may Allah be pleased with him) says: I went to her; her parents were present and she was concealed behind her curtain. I said: "The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) has commanded me to look at you." The two of them fell silent. Then the girl raised one side of her curtain and said: "I adjure you: if the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) has commanded you to look at me, then look; and if the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) has not commanded you to look at me, then do not look." So I looked at her, and then I married that woman. No woman ever reached her standing with me, and I married seventy or more than seventy women.

Sayyiduna Sahl bin Abi Hathmah (may Allah be pleased with him) says: I saw Muhammad bin Maslamah (may Allah be pleased with him) following with his gaze a woman on a rooftop, named Thubaytah bint al-Dahhak, the sister of Abu Jabirah. I said: "Do you do this while you are a Companion of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him)?" He said: "Yes; the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: 'When Allah Almighty puts into a man's heart (the intention) to propose to a woman, there is no harm in his looking at her.'"
The chain of this hadith is disputed, and it revolves around al-Hajjaj bin Artah; what has preceded is sufficient.
