It is narrated from Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "A woman is married for four reasons: for her wealth, for her lineage, for her beauty and for her religion. May your nose be in the dust; give preference to the one with religion."

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Jabir (may Allah be pleased with him) that he married a woman in the time of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), and he met the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "O Jabir! Have you married?" He said: "Yes, O Messenger of Allah!" He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "A virgin or a previously married woman?" He said that she was previously married. He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Why did you not marry a virgin, so that she would play with you?" He said: "O Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him)! I had sisters, and I feared that she would come between me and them." Then he (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "A woman is married for her wealth, her religion or her beauty. May your hands be covered in dust; give preference to the one with religion."

The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Do not marry women for their beauty, for perhaps their beauty will ruin them; and do not marry them for their wealth, for perhaps their wealth will incite them to rebellion. Rather, marry on the basis of religion. A black slave woman with cut ears is better, if she is religious."
