It is narrated from Sayyiduna Anas bin Malik (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) entered Makkah in the year it was conquered, wearing a helmet on his head. When he (peace and blessings be upon him) took it off, a man said: O Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), Ibn Khatal is clinging to the coverings of the Ka'bah. He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Kill him."

Abu Shurayh al-Adawi (may Allah be pleased with him) said to Amr bin Sa'id while he was sending troops to Makkah: O Amir, permit me to tell you a statement which the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) delivered on the day of the Conquest; my ears heard it, my heart retained it and my eyes saw him as he spoke. He praised Allah and extolled Him, then said: "Allah made Makkah sacred; it was not people who made it sacred. So it is not lawful for a man who believes in Allah and the Last Day to shed blood in it or to cut down a tree in it. If anyone seeks a concession on the grounds that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) fought in it, then say to him: 'Allah permitted His Messenger, but He did not permit you.' He permitted me only for an hour of a day, and today its sanctity has returned as it was yesterday. So let the one who is present convey it to the one who is absent." Abu Shurayh was asked: What did Amr say to you? He said: (Amr said:) "I know that better than you, O Abu Shurayh. The Sanctuary does not give refuge to a disobedient person, nor to one fleeing after shedding blood, nor to one fleeing after committing a crime."
