Sayyidah Aishah (may Allah be pleased with her) said: I used to feel jealous of the women who offered themselves to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), and I would say: "Can a woman gift herself?" Then Allah Almighty revealed the verse: "You may defer whom you will of them and take to yourself whom you will" [Surah al-Ahzab: 51]. So I said: "By Allah, I see that your (peace and blessings be upon him) Lord fulfils your wishes without delay."

Imam al-Sha'bi (may Allah have mercy on him) said: Women gifted themselves to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). He (peace and blessings be upon him) consummated marriage with some of them and deferred others, and he did not go near them until he (peace and blessings be upon him) passed away; and they did not marry after him (peace and blessings be upon him). Among them was Umm Sharik (may Allah be pleased with her). This is the saying of Allah Almighty: "You may defer whom you will of them and take to yourself whom you will; and whoever you desire of those you had set aside, there is no blame upon you." [Surah al-Ahzab: 51]

Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) said: The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) did not have any woman who had gifted herself to him. On the basis of this hadith, if its chain is sound, it is as though the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) deferred marrying them and did not accept them, even though they were lawful for him (peace and blessings be upon him). And Allah knows best.

It is narrated from Ibn Qusayt (may Allah have mercy on him) that a man was given the good news of a girl, and another man said: Gift her to me. He said: She is yours. Sa'id bin al-Musayyib (may Allah have mercy on him) was asked about this, and he said: Gifting (a woman in marriage) is not permissible for anyone after the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him); and if he gives her even a whip as her dowry (mahr), she is lawful for him.
