أَخْبَرَنَا أَبُو عَبْدِ اللهِ الْحَافِظُ، أنبأ أَبُو الْحَسَنِ أَحْمَدُ بْنُ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ عَبْدُوسٍ الْعَنَزِيُّ، ثنا عُثْمَانُ بْنُ سَعِيدٍ الدَّارِمِيُّ، ثنا الْقَعْنَبِيُّ، فِيمَا قَرَأَ عَلَى مَالِكٍ، ح، قَالَ: وَثَنَا يَحْيَى بْنُ بُكَيْرٍ، ثنا مَالِكٌ، عَنْ هِشَامِ بْنِ عُرْوَةَ، عَنْ أَبِيهِ، عَنْ عَائِشَةَ أُمِّ الْمُؤْمِنِينَ رَضِيَ اللهُ عَنْهَا أَنَّ الْحَارِثَ بْنَ هِشَامٍ رَضِيَ اللهُ عَنْهُ سَأَلَ رَسُولَ اللهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ، فَقَالَ: يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ كَيْفَ يَأْتِيكَ الْوَحْيُ؟ فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللهِ صلَّى الله عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ: " أَحْيَانًا يَأْتِينِي مِثْلَ صَلْصَلَةِ الْجَرَسِ وَهُوَ أَشَدُّهُ عَلَيَّ، فَيَفْصِمُ عَنِّي، وَقَدْ وَعَيْتُ مَا قَالَ الْمَلَكُ، وَأَحْيَانًا يَتَمَثَّلُ لِيَ الْمَلَكُ رَجُلًا، فَيُعَلِّمُنِي فَأَعِي مَا يَقُولُ " قَالَتْ عَائِشَةُ رَضِيَ اللهُ عَنْهَا: وَلَقَدْ رَأَيْتُهُ يَنْزِلُ عَلَيْهِ الْوَحْيُ فِي الْيَوْمِ الشَّدِيدِ الْبَرْدِ، فَيَفْصِمُ عَنْهُ وَأَنَّ جَبِينَهُ لَيتَفَصَّدُ عَرْقًا قَالَ الْقَعْنَبِيُّ فَيُكَلِّمُنِي " رَوَاهُ الْبُخَارِيُّ فِي الصَّحِيحِ عَنْ عَبْدِ اللهِ بْنِ يُوسُفَ، عَنْ مَالِكٍ، وَأَخْرَجَهُ مُسْلِمٌ مِنْ أَوْجُهٍ عَنْ هِشَامٍ.
Al-Harith bin Hisham (may Allah be pleased with him) asked him (peace and blessings be upon him): How does the revelation come to you? The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Sometimes the revelation comes like the ringing of a bell, and this is the hardest on me; then it leaves me, and I have retained what the angel said. And sometimes the angel comes in the form of a man; he teaches me and I retain what he says."
Sayyidah Aishah (may Allah be pleased with her) said: I saw the revelation descending upon him (peace and blessings be upon him) on a severely cold day; then it left him (peace and blessings be upon him), and his (peace and blessings be upon him) forehead was dripping with sweat.

أَخْبَرَنَا أَبُو طَاهِرٍ الْفَقِيهُ، ثنا عَلِيُّ بْنُ حَمْشَاذٍ الْعَدْلُ، ثنا الْحَارِثُ بْنُ أَبِي أُسَامَةَ، ثنا عَبْدُ الْوَهَّابِ بْنُ عَطَاءٍ، أنبأ سَعِيدٌ، عَنْ قَتَادَةَ، عَنِ الْحَسَنِ، عَنْ حِطَّانَ بْنِ عَبْدِ اللهِ الرَّقَاشِيِّ، عَنْ عُبَادَةَ بْنِ الصَّامِتِ، وَكَانَ عَقِبِيًّا بَدْرِيًّا، أَحَدَ نُقَبَاءِ الْأَنْصَارِ أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ كَانَ " إِذَا نَزَلَ عَلَيْهِ الْوَحْيُ كَرِبَ لِذَلِكَ وَتَرَبَّدَ لَهُ وَجْهُهُ "، أَخْرَجَهُ مُسْلِمٌ فِي الصَّحِيحِ مِنْ حَدِيثِ سَعِيدِ بْنِ أَبِي عَرُوبَةَ.
When revelation came down upon the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), he would be distressed by it, and his face would turn red or change colour.
أَخْبَرَنَا عَلِيُّ بْنُ أَحْمَدَ بْنِ عَبْدَانَ، أنبأ أَحْمَدُ بْنُ عُبَيْدٍ الصَّفَّارُ، ثنا إِسْمَاعِيلُ الْقَاضِي، ثنا حَجَّاجُ بْنُ مِنْهَالٍ، وَسُلَيْمَانُ بْنُ حَرْبٍ قَالَا: ثنا حَمَّادُ بْنُ سَلَمَةَ، ثنا عَمَّارُ بْنُ أَبِي عَمَّارٍ، عَنِ ابْنِ عَبَّاسٍ رَضِيَ اللهُ عَنْهُمَا قَالَ: كُنْتُ مَعَ أَبِي عِنْدَ النَّبِيِّ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ وَمَعَ النَّبِيِّ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ رَجُلٌ يُنَاجِيهِ، فَكَانَ كَالْمُعْرِضِ عَنْ أَبِي فَخَرَجْنَا مِنْ عِنْدِهِ، فَقَالَ: أَلَمْ تَرَ إِلَى ابْنِ عَمِّكَ كَانَ كَالْمُعْرِضِ عَنِّي؟ فَقُلْتُ لَهُ: يَا أَبَتِ كَانَ عِنْدَهُ رَجُلٌ يُنَاجِيهِ قَالَ: وَكَانَ أَحَدٌ؟ قُلْتُ: نَعَمْ فَرَجَعْنَا، فَقَالَ: يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ إِنِّي قُلْتُ لِعَبْدِ اللهِ كَذَا وَكَذَا، فَقَالَ لِي: كَذَا وَكَذَا فَهَلْ كَانَ عِنْدَكَ أَحَدٌ؟ فَقَالَ: " نَعَمْ هَلْ رَأَيْتَهُ يَا عَبْدَ اللهِ؟ " قُلْتُ: نَعَمْ قَالَ: " ذَلِكَ جِبْرِيلُ عَلَيْهِ السَّلَامُ هُوَ الَّذِي شَغَلَنِي عَنْكَ ".
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both): I was with my father in the company of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), and with the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) was a man who was speaking to him (peace and blessings be upon him) privately, so he (peace and blessings be upon him) was turning away from my father. We left him, and my father said to me: Did you see my nephew, as though he was turning away from me? I said to him: Father, there was a man with him with whom he was speaking privately. He said: Was there someone with him? I said: Yes. We came back to him (peace and blessings be upon him), and he said: O Messenger of Allah, I said such and such to Abdullah, and he answered me such and such; was there someone with you (peace and blessings be upon him)? He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Yes. Did you see him, O Abdullah?" I said: Yes. He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "That was Jibril, with whom I was occupied."
