Sayyiduna Hasan bin Ali (may Allah be pleased with them both) took a date from the dates of charity and ate it. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Kikh, kikh!" so that he would throw it out. Then he (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Do you not know that we do not eat charity?"

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) that dates of charity were brought to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) from the people's harvests. People began presenting their own dates until a heap of dates had gathered with him. Hasan bin Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) was playing with those dates; he picked up a date and ate it. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) took it out of his mouth and threw it away, then said: "Do you not know that the family of Muhammad do not eat charity?"

Abdullah bin Ubaydullah bin al-Abbas said: We were sitting with Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) among some young men of Banu Hashim, and he said: By Allah, the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) did not single us out for anything to the exclusion of other people except three things: "He commanded us to perform ablution thoroughly, he commanded us not to eat charity, and not to mate donkeys with horses."

Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) said: My father sent me to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) concerning camels which he (peace and blessings be upon him) had given him from the charity.
This carries the possibility of two meanings: 1 that this was before charity was made forbidden for Banu Hashim, and was then abrogated; 2 that he (peace and blessings be upon him) borrowed camels from Sayyiduna Abbas (may Allah be pleased with him) for the poor, and then repaid him from the camels of charity.
