It is narrated from Abdullah bin Amr (may Allah be pleased with them both) that when spoils came to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), he (peace and blessings be upon him) would order Bilal (may Allah be pleased with him), who would announce it among the people; they would then bring their spoils, and he (peace and blessings be upon him) would take out the khumus from it and distribute it.

Abdullah bin Shaqiq (may Allah have mercy on him) narrates from a man of Balqayn who said: I came to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) while he (peace and blessings be upon him) was in Wadi al-Qura inspecting a horse. I said: O Messenger of Allah, what do you say about the spoils? He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "One-fifth of it is for Allah, and the remaining four parts are for the army." I said: Is anyone more entitled (to it) than another? He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "No; not even the arrow you pull out of your side: you are not more entitled to it than your Muslim brother."
