It is narrated from Sayyiduna Nu'man bin Bashir (may Allah be pleased with them both): My father brought me to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and said: I have given this son of mine a slave as a gift. He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Have you given a gift to all your sons?" He said: No. So he (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Then take it back." (In another narration) the word is "farji'hu" (take it back).

Tawus (may Allah have mercy on him) says that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "It is not lawful for anyone to give a gift and then take it back, except a father."
This is mursal (with the Companion missing), and it has also been narrated with a connected chain.

Sayyiduna Ibn Abbas and Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) both said that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "It is not proper for anyone to give a gift and then take it back, except a father with regard to what he gives his child. The likeness of one who gives a gift and then takes it back is that of a dog which eats until, when it is full, it vomits, and then goes back to its vomit and eats it."

Amr bin Shu'ayb (may Allah have mercy on him) narrates from his father, from his grandfather (may Allah be pleased with him), that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "No one should take back his gift except a father, and the one who takes back his gift is like one who returns to his vomit."

Amr bin Shu'ayb narrates from his father, from his grandfather (may Allah be pleased with him), that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "A man should not take back his gift, except a father from his child; and the one who takes back his gift is like one who returns to his vomit."
It is possible that Amr bin Shu'ayb narrated it through both routes, for Husayn al-Mu'allim is a hujjah (authority) and Amir al-Ahwal is thiqah (trustworthy).

Abu Qilabah says that Umar bin al-Khattab (may Allah be pleased with him) wrote: A man may take back from his child what he gave him, as long as the child has not died, or it has not been used up, or a debt has not attached to it. [Da'if (weak)]
