Sayyiduna Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) says that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) sent Sayyiduna Umar bin al-Khattab (may Allah be pleased with him) to collect zakah, and Ibn Jamil, Khalid bin al-Walid and Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them) refused to pay zakah. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Ibn Jamil does not remember that he was poor and Allah made him rich. As for Khalid, you are wronging him; he has endowed his armour in the path of Allah. And as for Abbas (may Allah be pleased with him), his matter is my responsibility, and as much again besides." Then he said: "Do you not know that a man's paternal uncle is like his father?"

The wording of one narration is: "His armour and war equipment are endowed in the path of Allah. And as for Abbas bin Abd al-Muttalib (may Allah be pleased with him), the paternal uncle of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), his zakah is a charity upon him, and as much again along with it."

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) intended to perform Hajj. A woman said to her husband: Take me for Hajj with the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) too. He said: I have nothing on which to take you for Hajj. She said: Take me for Hajj on such-and-such camel. He said: That is dedicated to the path of Allah. She said: Then take me on your (water-carrying) camel. He said: I and your son use it for work and the like. She said: Sell your fruit. He said: That is my food and yours. When the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) came, she sent her husband to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and said: Convey my salam to him, and ask him what is equal to a Hajj with him. Her husband came to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and said: My wife sends you her salam, and she asked me to take her for Hajj. I said: I have nothing on which to take you for Hajj. She said: Take me for Hajj on such-and-such camel. I said: It is dedicated to the path of Allah. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "If you had taken her for Hajj on it, that too would have been in the path of Allah." The woman said: Take me for Hajj on your camel. I said: I and your son use it for work and the like. She said: Sell your fruit. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) laughed on hearing of her eagerness for Hajj. The man said: My wife has told me to ask you (peace and blessings be upon him) what is equal to a Hajj with you. He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Convey my salam to her, and tell her that an Umrah in Ramadan is equal to a Hajj with me."
