It is narrated from Imam al-Shafi'i (may Allah have mercy on him) that Qadi Shurayh held that a fuller is liable, and he held liable a fuller whose house had burned down. The fuller said: You hold me liable when my house has burned down? Qadi Shurayh said: What do you think, if his house had burned down, would you have given up your wage to him? Ibn Uyaynah reported this.
Imam al-Shafi'i (may Allah have mercy on him) said: It has been narrated, through a chain whose like the scholars of hadith do not accept as established, that Sayyiduna Ali bin Abi Talib (may Allah be pleased with him) held the washerman and the dyer liable, and said: Nothing but this will set people right.

It is narrated from Ja'far bin Muhammad, from his father, that Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) said that.
Imam al-Shafi'i (may Allah have mercy on him) said: It is narrated from Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) that he held some craftsmen liable, through a chain weaker than this, and we do not know either of the two to be established.
He said: It has also been narrated from Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him), through another chain, that he did not hold any hired worker liable, through a chain whose like is not established.
It is established from Ata bin Abi Rabah (may Allah have mercy on him) that he said: There is no liability on a craftsman, nor on a hired worker.

Qatadah narrates from Khilas that Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) used to hold the hired worker liable.
Jabir al-Ju'fi, who is da'if (weak), narrated from al-Sha'bi that Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) used to hold the hired worker liable.
The narration of Ja'far from his father from Ali is mursal, and the scholars of hadith consider the narrations of Khilas from Ali weak.

Shu'bah (may Allah have mercy on him) narrates from Abu al-Haytham that some oil of his was brought from Basrah, and he hired a porter to carry it; the flask was worth three or four hundred. It fell and broke. I wanted him to settle with me, but he refused, so I took the matter to Shurayh (may Allah have mercy on him). Shurayh (may Allah have mercy on him) said to him: He gave the wage only so that you would be liable. Qadi Shurayh (may Allah have mercy on him) held him liable; then people kept trying until I settled with him.

Al-A'mash (may Allah have mercy on him) says: I asked Ibrahim (may Allah have mercy on him) about the fuller, and he said: He is liable.
Then it reached me that Hammad narrates from Ibrahim (may Allah have mercy on him) that he said: He is not liable. So I met him and said: By Allah, I do not know whether I ever saw you with Ibrahim or not! He said: Do not do this, O Abu Muhammad, for this distresses me. And Allah knows best.
