Sayyiduna Abu Sa'id (may Allah be pleased with him) said: In the time of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), a man bought some fruit, and it was destroyed by some calamity, and his debt became very great. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Give him charity." So the people gave him charity, but even then his debt was not fully paid. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Take whatever you have found; you have nothing other than that."

Abd al-Rahman bin Ka'b (may Allah be pleased with him) said: The debt of Sayyiduna Mu'adh bin Jabal (may Allah be pleased with him), who was one of his people, Banu Salimah, grew very large in the time of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him). He (peace and blessings be upon him) did nothing more than distribute the property of Mu'adh (may Allah be pleased with him) among the creditors.

Sayyiduna Jabir bin Abdullah (may Allah be pleased with them both) said: Sayyiduna Mu'adh bin Jabal (may Allah be pleased with him) was among the most handsome of people in face, the best in character and the most generous-handed. A great deal of debt fell upon him. The creditors pursued him. He hid from people in his house for several days. The creditors demanded that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) summon him. He (peace and blessings be upon him) sent for him, and he came with the creditors along with him. They said: "O Messenger of Allah! Get us our right from him!" The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Whoever gives him charity, Allah will have mercy on him." A few people gave charity, while others refused and kept on demanding. He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "O Mu'adh, be patient with them." Then the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) took his property from him and handed it to the creditors, who divided it among themselves, and they received five-sevenths of what they were owed. They said: "Sell him to us." He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Leave him alone; you have no claim against him." Al-Waqidi is alone in narrating some of its wording.
