Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) taught that when the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) mounted his camel setting out on a journey, he would say "Allahu akbar" three times, then say: "Glory be to the One who has subjected this to us, and we could not have done it ourselves; and indeed, to our Lord we will surely return." [Surah al-Zukhruf: 13-14] 'Allahumma inna nas'aluka fi safarina hadha al-birra wa al-taqwa, wa min al-amali ma tuhibbu wa tarda. Allahumma hawwin alayna safarana wa-twi anna bu'dahu. Allahumma anta al-sahibu fi al-safar, wa al-khalifatu fi al-ahl. Allahumma inna na'udhu bika min wa'tha'i al-safar, wa ka'abati al-munqalab, wa su'i al-manzari fi al-ahli wa al-mal' (O Allah, on this journey of ours we ask You for righteousness and piety, and for deeds that You love and are pleased with. O Allah, make our journey easy for us and fold up its distance for us. O Allah, You are the Companion on the journey and the Guardian over the family. O Allah, we seek refuge in You from the hardship of travel, the grief of an unhappy return, and an evil sight in family and wealth.) And when he returned, he would say these words and add to them: 'Ayibuna ta'ibuna li-rabbina hamidun' (We are returning, repenting, and praising our Lord.)
(b) In the narration of Ibn Wahb it is: "O Allah, we ask You on this travel of ours," but he did not say "love", and he said: "O Allah, I seek refuge in You from the hardship of travel, the grief of an evil sight, and an unhappy return"; and in it there is the addition: "worshipping, and praising our Lord."

Ali bin Rabi'ah (may Allah have mercy on him) says that he was with Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) when he mounted. When he put his foot in the stirrup, he said: 'Bismillah' (In the name of Allah). When he had settled on the mount, he said: 'Al-hamdu lillah' (All praise is for Allah). Then he said: "Glory be to the One who has subjected this to us, and we could not have done it ourselves; and indeed, to our Lord we will surely return." [Surah al-Zukhruf: 13-14] Then he said 'Al-hamdu lillah' (All praise is for Allah) three times and 'Allahu akbar' (Allah is the Greatest) three times. Then he said: 'La ilaha illa anta, zalamtu nafsi fa-ghfir li, innahu la yaghfiru al-dhunuba illa anta' (There is no god but You; I have wronged myself, so forgive me, for none forgives sins except You.) Then he smiled. It was said: O Commander of the Believers, what made you laugh? He said: I saw the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) do just as I have done, and he (peace and blessings be upon him) said just as I have said; then he smiled. We said: O Prophet of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), what made you laugh? He said: "The servant" (or he said:) "I am amazed at the servant when he says: There is no god but You, I have wronged myself, so forgive me, none forgives sins except You, while the servant knows that none forgives sins except Him."

Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) says: When a man rides an animal and does not mention the name of Allah, Satan rides behind him and says to him: Sing! And if he cannot sing well, he says to him: Indulge in wishful thoughts!
This is mawquf (a statement of the Companion).

Abu Las al-Khuza'i (may Allah be pleased with him) says: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) mounted us for Hajj on some weak camels from the camels of charity (sadaqah). We said: "O Messenger of Allah, we do not think these can carry us." He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "There is no camel but that on its hump there is a devil, so mention the name of Allah when you ride them, as He has commanded you; then put them to work for yourselves, for it is only Allah who carries."
