أَخْبَرَنَا أَبُو عَبْدِ اللهِ الْحَافِظُ، وَأَبُو زَكَرِيَّا بْنُ أَبِي إِسْحَاقَ، وَأَبُو بَكْرِ بْنُ الْحَسَنِ، قَالُوا: ثنا أَبُو الْعَبَّاسِ مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ يَعْقُوبَ، أنبأ الرَّبِيعُ بْنُ سُلَيْمَانَ، أنبأ الشَّافِعِيُّ، أنبأ مَالِكٌ ح وَأَخْبَرَنَا أَبُو عَبْدِ اللهِ الْحَافِظُ، ثنا يَحْيَى بْنُ مَنْصُورٍ، ثنا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ عَبْدِ السَّلَامِ، ثنا يَحْيَى بْنُ يَحْيَى، قَالَ: قَرَأْتُ عَلَى مَالِكٍ ح، وَأَخْبَرَنَا أَبُو عَبْدِ اللهِ الْحَافِظُ، أَخْبَرَنِي أَبُو النَّضْرِ مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ يُوسُفَ، ثنا عُثْمَانُ بْنُ سَعِيدٍ، ثنا الْقَعْنَبِيُّ، عَنْ مَالِكِ بْنِ أَنَسٍ فِيمَا قَرَأَ عَلَيْهِ، عَنِ ابْنِ شِهَابٍ، عَنْ سَالِمِ بْنِ عَبْدِ اللهِ أَنَّ عَبْدَ اللهِ بْنَ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ أَبِي بَكْرٍ الصِّدِّيقِ أَخْبَرَ عَبْدَ اللهِ بْنَ عُمَرَ، عَنْ عَائِشَةَ رَضِيَ اللهُ عَنْهَا أَنَّ النَّبِيَّ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ، قَالَ: " أَلَمْ تَرَيْ إِلَى قَوْمِكِ حِينَ بَنَوَا الْكَعْبَةَ اقْتَصَرُوا عَنْ قَوَاعِدِ إِبْرَاهِيمَ؟ "، قُلْتُ: يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ، أَفَلَا تَرُدُّهُ عَلَى قَوَاعِدِ إِبْرَاهِيمَ؟، فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ: " لَوْلَا حِدْثَانُ قَوْمِكِ بِالْكُفْرِ لَفَعَلْتُ ". فَقَالَ عَبْدُ اللهِ بْنُ عُمَرَ: لَئِنْ كَانَتْ عَائِشَةُ سَمِعَتْ هَذَا مِنْ رَسُولِ اللهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ مَا أَرَى رَسُولَ اللهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ تَرَكَ اسْتِلَامَ الرُّكْنَيْنِ اللَّذَيْنِ يَلِيَانِ الْحِجْرَ إِلَّا أَنَّ الْبَيْتَ لَمْ يُتَمَّمْ عَلَى قَوَاعِدِ إِبْرَاهِيمَ لَفْظُ حَدِيثِ الْقَعْنَبِيِّ رَوَاهُ الْبُخَارِيُّ عَنِ الْقَعْنَبِيِّ، وَرَوَاهُ مُسْلِمٌ عَنْ يَحْيَى بْنِ يَحْيَى.
Sayyidah Aishah (may Allah be pleased with her) said that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Have you not seen that when your people built the Ka'bah, they fell short of the foundations of Ibrahim?" I said: "O Messenger of Allah, why do you not restore it to the foundations of Ibrahim?" So he (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Were it not that your people's time of disbelief is so recent, I would have done so." Then Abdullah bin Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) said: "If Aishah (may Allah be pleased with her) heard this from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), then I think that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) left touching the two corners next to the Hijr only because they are not on the foundations of Ibrahim."
وَأَخْبَرَنَا أَبُو عَلِيٍّ الرُّوذْبَارِيُّ، أنبأ مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ بَكْرٍ، ثنا أَبُو دَاوُدَ، ثنا مَخْلَدُ بْنُ خَالِدٍ، ثنا عَبْدُ الرَّزَّاقِ، أنبأ مَعْمَرٌ، عَنِ الزُّهْرِيِّ، عَنْ سَالِمٍ، عَنِ ابْنِ عُمَرَ أَنَّهُ أُخْبِرَ بِقَوْلِ عَائِشَةَ رَضِيَ اللهُ عَنْهَا: " إِنَّ الْحَجَرَ بَعْضُهُ مِنَ الْبَيْتِ "، فَقَالَ ابْنُ عُمَرَ: " وَاللهِ إِنِّي لَأَظُنُّ إِنْ كَانَتْ عَائِشَةُ سَمِعَتْ هَذَا مِنْ رَسُولِ اللهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ إِنِّي لَأَظُنُّ رَسُولَ اللهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ لَمْ يَتْرُكِ اسْتِلَامَهُمَا إِلَّا أَنَّهُمَا لَيْسَا عَلَى قَوَاعِدِ الْبَيْتِ، وَلَا طَافَ النَّاسُ مِنْ وَرَاءِ الْحَجَرِ إِلَّا لِذَلِكَ ".
Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) was informed of this statement of Sayyidah Aishah (may Allah be pleased with her): that part of the low wall (al-Hijr) is included in the House of Allah. So Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) said: By Allah! I think that if Aishah (may Allah be pleased with her) heard this from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), then the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) left touching those two (corners) only because they are not on the foundations of the House of Allah, and it is for this very reason that the people performed tawaf from behind this low wall.
أَخْبَرَنَا أَبُو زَكَرِيَّا يَحْيَى بْنُ إِبْرَاهِيمَ بْنِ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ يَحْيَى، ثنا أَبُو عَبْدِ اللهِ ⦗١٤٥⦘ مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ يَعْقُوبَ، ثنا يَحْيَى بْنُ مُحَمَّدٍ، وَمُحَمَّدُ بْنُ إِبْرَاهِيمَ، قَالَا: ثنا مُسَدَّدٌ، ثنا أَبُو الْأَحْوَصِ، ثنا الْأَشْعَثُ بْنُ سُلَيْمٍ، عَنِ الْأَسْوَدِ بْنِ يَزِيدَ، عَنْ عَائِشَةَ رَضِيَ اللهُ عَنْهَا، قَالَتْ: سَأَلْتُ رَسُولَ اللهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ عَنِ الْجَدْرِ أَمِنَ الْبَيْتِ هِيَ؟، قَالَ: " نَعَمْ "، قُلْتُ: فَمَا لَهُمْ لَمْ يُدْخِلُوهُ فِي الْبَيْتِ؟ فَقَالَ: " إِنَّ قَوْمَكِ قَصُرَتْ بِهُمُ النَّفَقَةُ " قُلْتُ: فَمَا شَأْنُ بَابِهِ مُرْتَفِعٌ؟، قَالَ: " فَعَلَ ذَلِكَ قَوْمُكِ؛ لِيُدْخِلُوا مَنْ شَاءُوا وَيَمْنَعُوا مَنْ شَاءُوا، وَلَوْلَا أَنَّ قَوْمَكِ حَدِيثُ عَهْدٍ بِجَاهِلِيَّةٍ، فَأَخَافُ أَنْ تُنْكِرَ قُلُوبُهُمْ لَنَظَرْتُ أَنْ أُدْخِلَ الْجَدْرَ فِي الْبَيْتِ، وَأَنْ أُلْصِقَ بَابَهُ بِالْأَرْضِ " رَوَاهُ الْبُخَارِيُّ فِي الصَّحِيحِ، عَنْ مُسَدَّدٍ، وَرَوَاهُ مُسْلِمٌ، عَنْ سَعِيدِ بْنِ مَنْصُورٍ، عَنْ أَبِي الْأَحْوَصِ.
Sayyidah Aishah (may Allah be pleased with her) said: I asked the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) whether the wall is part of the House of Allah. He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Yes!" I said: Why then did they not include it in the House of Allah? He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Your people ran short of funds." I said: Why is its door raised high? He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Your people did this so that they could let in whomever they wished and keep out whomever they wished. Were it not that your people are recently out of the Jahiliyyah, and were there not the fear of disapproval in their hearts, I had thought to include the wall in the House of Allah and to set its door level with the ground."
أَخْبَرَنَا أَبُو عُثْمَانَ سَعِيدُ بْنُ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ عَبْدَانَ النَّيْسَابُورِيُّ، ثنا أَبُو عَبْدِ اللهِ مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ يَعْقُوبَ إِمْلَاءً، ثنا إِبْرَاهِيمُ بْنُ عَبْدِ اللهِ، وَالْحُسَيْنُ بْنُ الْفَضْلِ، قَالَ الْحُسَيْنُ: حَدَّثَنَا وَقَالَ، إِبْرَاهِيمُ: أنبأ عَبْدُ اللهِ بْنُ بَكْرٍ، ثنا حَاتِمُ بْنُ أَبِي صَغِيرَةَ، عَنْ أَبِي قَزَعَةَ أَنَّ عَبْدَ الْمَلِكِ بْنَ مَرْوَانَ بَيْنَمَا هُوَ يَطُوفُ بِالْبَيْتِ إِذْ قَالَ: قَاتَلَ اللهُ ابْنَ الزُّبَيْرِ حَيْثُ يَكْذِبُ عَلَى أُمِّ الْمُؤْمِنِينَ يَقُولُ: سَمِعْتُهَا تَقُولُ: قَالَ رَسُولُ اللهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ: " لَوْلَا حِدْثَانُ قَوْمِكِ بِالْكُفْرِ لَنَقَضْتُ الْبَيْتَ حَتَّى أَزِيدَ فِيهِ مِنَ الْحِجْرِ، فَإِنَّ قَوْمَكِ قَصَّرُوا فِي الْبِنَاءِ ". فَقَالَ الْحَارِثُ بْنُ عَبْدِ اللهِ بْنِ أَبِي رَبِيعَةَ: لَا تَقُلْ هَذَا يَا أَمِيرَ الْمُؤْمِنِينَ، فَإِنِّي سَمِعْتُ أُمَّ الْمُؤْمِنِينَ تُحَدِّثُ بِهَذَا، قَالَ: لَوْ كُنْتُ سَمِعْتُهُ قَبْلَ أَنْ أَهْدِمَهُ لَتَرَكْتُهُ عَلَى بِنَاءِ ابْنِ الزُّبَيْرِ رَوَاهُ مُسْلِمٌ فِي الصَّحِيحِ، عَنْ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ حَاتِمٍ، عَنْ عَبْدِ اللهِ بْنِ بَكْرٍ السَّهْمِيِّ، قَالَ الشَّافِعِيُّ: سَمِعْتُ عَدَدًا مِنْ أَهْلِ الْعِلْمِ مِنْ قُرَيْشٍ يَذْكُرُونَ أَنَّهُ تُرِكَ مِنَ الْكَعْبَةِ فِي الْحِجْرِ نَحْوٌ مِنْ سِتَّةِ أَذْرُعٍ.
Abu Qaza'ah (may Allah have mercy on him) said that Abd al-Malik bin Marwan, while performing tawaf of the House of Allah, said: May Allah Almighty destroy Ibn al-Zubayr (may Allah be pleased with them both)! He lies against the Mother of the Believers (may Allah be pleased with her), saying: I heard her say that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Were it not that your people's time of disbelief is so recent, I would have pulled down the House of Allah and included the wall in it, for your people cut the building short." Then al-Harith bin Abdullah bin Abi Rabi'ah (may Allah have mercy on him) said: O Commander of the Believers! Do not say this, for I heard the Mother of the Believers (may Allah be pleased with her) narrating this. So he said: Had I heard this before demolishing it, I would have left it upon the building of Ibn al-Zubayr (may Allah be pleased with them both).
Imam al-Shafi'i (may Allah have mercy on him) said: I heard a number of the people of knowledge from Quraysh mention that about six cubits of the Ka'bah, up to the wall, were left out.

قَالَ الشَّيْخُ: أَخْبَرَنَا بِصِحَّةِ، ذَلِكَ أَبُو عَبْدِ اللهِ الْحَافِظُ، أنبأ أَحْمَدُ بْنُ جَعْفَرٍ، ثنا عَبْدُ اللهِ بْنُ أَحْمَدَ بْنِ حَنْبَلٍ، حَدَّثَنِي أَبِي، ثنا عَبْدُ الرَّحْمَنِ بْنُ مَهْدِيٍّ، ثنا سُلَيْمُ بْنُ حَيَّانَ، عَنْ سَعِيدِ بْنِ مِينَاءَ،، قَالَ: سَمِعْتُ عَبْدَ اللهِ بْنَ الزُّبَيْرِ، يَقُولُ: حَدَّثَتْنِي خَالَتِي يَعْنِي عَائِشَةَ قَالَتْ: قَالَ النَّبِيُّ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ: " يَا عَائِشَةُ لَوْلَا أَنَّ قَوْمَكِ حَدِيثُو عَهْدٍ بِشِرْكٍ لَهَدَمْتُ الْكَعْبَةَ فَأَلْزَقْتُهَا بِالْأَرْضِ، وَجَعَلْتُ لَهَا بَابَيْنِ بَابًا شَرْقِيًّا وَبَابًا غَرْبِيًّا، وَزِدْتُ فِيهَا سِتَّةَ أَذْرُعٍ مِنَ الْحِجْرِ، فَإِنَّ قُرَيْشًا اقْتَصَرَتْ بِهَا حِينَ بِنَتِ الْكَعْبَةَ " ⦗١٤٦⦘ رَوَاهُ مُسْلِمٌ فِي الصَّحِيحِ، عَنْ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ حَاتِمٍ، عَنْ عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ بْنِ مَهْدِيٍّ، وَفِي رِوَايَةِ عَطَاءٍ عَنِ ابْنِ الزُّبَيْرِِ، عَنْ عَائِشَةَ: خَمْسَةَ أَذْرُعٍ. وَفِي رِوَايَةِ عَبْدِ اللهِ بْنِ عُبَيْدِ بْنِ عُمَيْرٍ، عَنِ الْحَارِثِ بْنِ عَبْدِ اللهِ بْنِ أَبِي رَبِيعَةَ، عَنْ عَائِشَةَ رَضِيَ اللهُ عَنْهَا: قَرِيبًا فِي سَبْعَةِ أَذْرُعٍ، وَالسِّتَّةُ أَشْهَرُ.
Sayyidah Aishah (may Allah be pleased with her) said that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Were it not that your people's time of polytheism is so recent, I would have demolished the Ka'bah, set it level with the ground, made two doors for it, on the eastern and western sides, and included in it the six cubits up to the wall, for Quraysh cut it short when they built it."
وَقَدْ أَخْبَرَنَا أَبُو عَبْدِ اللهِ الْحَافِظُ، أنبأ أَبُو مُحَمَّدٍ عَبْدُ اللهِ بْنُ إِسْحَاقَ الْبَغَوِيُّ الْعَدْلُ بِبَغْدَادَ، ثنا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ سَعْدٍ الْعَوْفِيُّ، ثنا يَزِيدُ بْنُ هَارُونَ، أنبأ جَرِيرُ بْنُ حَازِمٍ، ثنا يَزِيدُ بْنُ رُومَانَ، عَنْ عُرْوَةَ، عَنْ عَائِشَةَ رَضِيَ اللهُ عَنْهَا أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ قَالَ لَهَا: " لَوْلَا أَنَّ قَوْمَكِ حَدِيثُ عَهْدٍ بِجَاهِلِيَّةٍ لَأَمَرْتُ بِالْبَيْتِ فَهُدِمَ، فَأُدْخِلُ فِيهِ مَا أُخْرِجَ مِنْهُ، وَأَلْزَقْتُهُ بِالْأَرْضِ، وَجَعَلْتُ لَهُ بَابَيْنِ بَابًا شَرْقِيًّا وَبَابًا غَرْبِيًّا فَإِنَّهُمْ عَجَزُوا عَنْ بِنَائِهِ فَبَلَغْتُ بِهِ بُنْيَانَ إِبْرَاهِيمَ " قَالَ: وَذَلِكَ الَّذِي حَمَلَ ابْنَ الزُّبَيْرِ عَلَى هَدْمِهِ، قَالَ يَزِيدُ بْنُ رُومَانَ: وَقَدْ شَهِدْتُ ابْنَ الزُّبَيْرِ حِينَ هَدْمَهُ وَأَدْخَلَ فِيهِ مِنَ الْحِجْرِ، وَقَدْ رَأَيْتُ بُنْيَانَ إِبْرَاهِيمَ عَلَيْهِ السَّلَامُ حِجَارَةً كَأَسْنِمَةِ الْإِبِلِ مُتَلَاحِمَةً أَوْ قَالَ: مُتَلَاحِكَةً، قَالَ جَرِيرٌ: فَقُلْتُ لَهُ: أَيْنَ مَوْضِعُهُ؟ قَالَ: أُرِيَكُمُ الْآنَ، فَأَدْخَلَنِي الْحِجْرَ، فَأَشَارَ إِلَى مَكَانٍ، فَقَالَ: هَا هُنَا، قَالَ جَرِيرٌ فَحَزَرْتُ مِنَ الْحِجْرِ سِتَّةَ أَذْرُعٍ أَوْ نَحْوَهَا. رَوَاهُ الْبُخَارِيُّ فِي الصَّحِيحِ، عَنْ بَيَانِ بْنِ عَمْرٍو، عَنْ يَزِيدَ بْنِ هَارُونَ. وَرَوَاهُ الْحَارِثُ بْنُ أَبِي أُسَامَةَ، عَنْ يَزِيدَ بْنِ هَارُونَ، عَنْ جُرَيْجٍ، عَنْ يَزِيدَ بْنِ رُومَانَ، عَنْ عَبْدِ اللهِ بْنِ الزُّبَيْرِ، قَالَ: قَالَتْ عَائِشَةُ. أَخْبَرَنَاهُ أَبُو عَبْدِ اللهِ الْحَافِظُ، ثنا عَبْدُ اللهِ بْنُ الْحُسَيْنِ الْقَاضِي بِمَرْوَ، ثنا الْحَارِثُ بْنُ أَبِي أُسَامَةَ فَذَكَرَهُ بِنَحْوِهِ. وَكَذَلِكَ رُوِيَ عَنْ وَهْبِ بْنِ جَرِيرِ بْنِ حَازِمٍ، عَنْ أَبِيهِ. وَكَأَنَّ يَزِيدَ بْنَ رُومَانَ سَمِعَهُ مِنْ عَبْدِ اللهِ وَعُرْوَةَ جَمِيعًا.
Sayyidah Aishah (may Allah be pleased with her) said that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Were it not that your people are recently out of the Jahiliyyah, I would have given orders concerning the House of Allah and it would have been pulled down, the part that was taken out of it would have been put back into it, and I would have set it level with the ground and made two doors, one eastern and one western. They were unable to build it, so I would have brought it up to the foundations of Ibrahim."
The narrator said: That is what led Ibn al-Zubayr (may Allah be pleased with them both) to demolish it. Yazid bin Ruman said: I was present with Ibn al-Zubayr (may Allah be pleased with them both) when he demolished it and included part of the Hijr in it, and I saw the foundations of Ibrahim (peace be upon him): stones like the humps of camels, joined to one another. Jarir said: I asked him: Where is its place? He said: I will show you now. So he took me into the Hijr, pointed to a spot and said: Here. Jarir said: So I estimated it, and it was six cubits of the Hijr, or about that.
The narrator said: That is what led Ibn al-Zubayr (may Allah be pleased with them both) to demolish it. أَخْبَرَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ عَبْدِ اللهِ الْحَافِظُ، ثنا أَبُو بَكْرِ بْنُ إِسْحَاقَ، ثنا بِشْرُ بْنُ مُوسَى، ثنا الْحُمَيْدِيُّ، ثنا سُفْيَانُ، عَنْ هِشَام بْنِ حُجَيْرٍ، عَنْ طَاوُسٍ، عَنِ ابْنِ عَبَّاسٍ، قَالَ: " الْحِجْرِ مِنَ الْبَيْتِ؛ لِأَنَّ رَسُولَ اللهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ طَافَ بِالْبَيْتِ مِنْ وَرَائِهِ، قَالَ اللهُ تَعَالَى {وَلْيَطَّوَّفُوا بِالْبَيْتِ الْعَتِيقِ} [الحج: ٢٩] ".
Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) said: That barrier (the Hijr) is part of the House of Allah, because the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) performed tawaf of the House of Allah from behind it, and Allah Almighty has said: "And let them perform tawaf of the Ancient House." [Surah Al-Hajj: 29]
