Sayyiduna Jabir (may Allah be pleased with him) said that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) set out in Ramadan in the year of the Conquest and fasted until he reached Kura' al-Ghamim, and the people fasted with him (peace and blessings be upon him). It was said: O Messenger of Allah, fasting has become hard for the people. So he (peace and blessings be upon him) called for a cup of water after Asr and drank it while the people were watching. Some of them broke their fast and some did not. Then it reached him (peace and blessings be upon him) that some people were still fasting, and he (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Those are the disobedient ones."

Sayyiduna Abu Sa'id al-Khudri (may Allah be pleased with him) said: The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) ordered us to set out in the year of the Conquest when two nights of Ramadan had passed. We went out fasting until, when we reached al-Kadid, he (peace and blessings be upon him) ordered us to break the fast, and the people divided into two groups: among them were those fasting and those not fasting. Then, when we reached the place where we were to meet the enemy, he (peace and blessings be upon him) ordered us to break the fast, and we all broke our fast.
In a narration of Ibn Yusuf: When he (peace and blessings be upon him) reached al-Zahran, he (peace and blessings be upon him) ordered us to face the enemy and told us to break the fast, so we all broke our fast.

Sayyiduna Abu Sa'id (may Allah be pleased with him) said: We travelled with the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) to Makkah while we were fasting. We stopped at a halting place, and the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "You have drawn near to your enemy, and breaking the fast will give you strength." This was a concession, so some of us fasted and some broke the fast. Then we stopped at another halting place, and he (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "You will meet your enemy in the morning, and breaking the fast will give you strength, so break your fast." This was a firm command, so we broke our fast. Then he said: I saw us fasting on journeys with him (peace and blessings be upon him) after that.

Abu Bakr bin Abd al-Rahman narrated from one of the Companions (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) ordered the people, on his journey in the year of the Conquest, to break the fast, and said: "Gain strength for your enemy." And the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) himself fasted. Ibn Abd al-Rahman (may Allah have mercy on him) said: The one who narrated to me said: I saw the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) at al-Arj pouring water over his head because of thirst, or because of the heat. It was said: O Messenger of Allah, a group of people fasted when you (peace and blessings be upon him) were fasting. Then, when he (peace and blessings be upon him) reached al-Kadid, he called for a cup and drank, and the people broke their fast too.
