Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) said that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Actions depend on intention, and a person shall have only what he intended. So whoever's emigration is for Allah and His Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him), his emigration is to Allah and His Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him); and whoever emigrated to attain the world, his emigration is to the world, or (whoever emigrated) for a woman in order to marry her, then his emigration is to that for which he emigrated."

Sayyiduna Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) said that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Allah Almighty says: Fasting is for Me and I Myself will reward it, for he leaves his desire, his food and his drink for My sake. Fasting is a shield, and the fasting person has two joys: one joy at the time of breaking his fast and one joy at the time of meeting his Lord. And the smell of his mouth is more beloved to Allah Almighty than the fragrance of musk."

Nafi' (may Allah have mercy on him) said that Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) used to observe voluntary fasts, and when he fainted he would not break his fast.
