Hamzah bin Abdullah bin Umar (may Allah have mercy on him) said: We went out to Syria. When we came to Madinah, Abdullah bin Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) said to us: Did you go to Syria to beg? But I heard the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) say: "A person who keeps on begging will meet Allah Almighty with not a single piece of flesh on his face."

Wahb bin Munabbih (may Allah have mercy on him) narrates from his brother that he said: I heard Sayyiduna Mu'awiyah (may Allah be pleased with him) say that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Do not be persistent in asking. By Allah, none of you asks me for anything and I give it to him from what I have while I dislike it, and then it is blessed for him."

Sayyiduna Hakim bin Hizam (may Allah be pleased with him) said: I asked the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) and he (peace and blessings be upon him) gave to me; I asked again and he (peace and blessings be upon him) gave to me; I asked again and he (peace and blessings be upon him) gave to me. Then he (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "O Hakim, this wealth is sweet and green. Whoever takes it with a generous heart, it is blessed for him; and whoever takes it with a craving heart, it is not blessed for him, and he is like one who eats but is never satisfied. And the upper hand is better than the lower hand." Hakim said: I said: O Messenger of Allah, by the One who sent you (peace and blessings be upon him) with the truth, after today I will not ask anyone for anything until I leave this world. So Sayyiduna Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) would call Hakim to give him (a stipend), but he would refuse to take it. Then Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) called him to give him, but he refused to accept. So Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) said: I bear witness, O people! I make you witnesses concerning Hakim (may Allah be pleased with him) that I offered him his right from this spoil, but he refused to take it. So Hakim (may Allah be pleased with him) took nothing from anyone after the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) until he passed away.

Sayyiduna Awf bin Malik al-Ashja'i (may Allah be pleased with him) said: We were with the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), nine, eight or seven people. He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Will you not pledge allegiance to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him)?" We were new to pledging allegiance. We said: O Messenger of Allah, we have already pledged allegiance to you (peace and blessings be upon him). Then he (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Will you not pledge allegiance to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him)?" We said: O Messenger of Allah, we have pledged allegiance. He (peace and blessings be upon him) said again: "Will you not pledge allegiance to the Messenger of Allah?" So we stretched out our hands and said: O Messenger of Allah, we have pledged allegiance to you (peace and blessings be upon him); on what shall we pledge allegiance? He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "That you will worship Allah, not associate anything with Him, pray the five prayers, and obey." And he (peace and blessings be upon him) said one thing quietly: "And you will not ask people for anything." Indeed, if the whip of one of that group fell, he would not even ask anyone to hand it to him.

He (the narrator) said: Often his whip would fall while he was on his camel, and even then he would not tell anyone to hand it to him, until he would dismount himself and pick it up.
