It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "The example of the one who spends and the miser is like that of two men wearing coats of mail, or cloaks, of iron reaching from their chests to their collarbones. When the one who spends wants to spend, his coat expands until it reaches his feet and even wipes out his footprints. And when the miser wants to spend, it contracts upon him and every ring sticks to its place, until it seizes him by the neck or by the throat. He tries to widen it but it does not widen. Then he tries again but does not succeed."
