Sayyiduna Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) said: A man came to him (peace and blessings be upon him), so he (peace and blessings be upon him) sent word to his wives, and they said: "We have nothing but water." So the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Then who will host this guest?" A man of the Ansar said: "I will." Then he took him to his home and said to his wife: "This is the guest of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him); honour him." She said: "I have kept only the children's food." He said: "Prepare the food, put out the lamp and put the children to sleep." So when they intended to eat, his wife prepared the food, adjusted the lamp and put the children to sleep. Then she stood up as if to adjust the lamp and put it out, and the two of them kept making him think that they too were eating, and they spent the night hungry. When morning came, he went to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), and he (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "This night Allah laughed," or he said: "marvelled, because of your deed." And Allah Almighty revealed this verse: "And they give preference to others over themselves, even though they themselves are in need" [Al-Hashr: 9].

Nafi' (may Allah have mercy on him) said: Abdullah bin Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) fell ill and he craved grapes, when the first grapes came. Sayyidah Safiyyah (may Allah be pleased with her) sent a dirham, and a bunch of grapes was bought with the dirham. A beggar followed the messenger, and when he reached the door and went inside, the beggar said: "A beggar! A beggar!" Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) said: "Give it to him," so they gave it to him. Then she sent another dirham and a bunch of grapes was bought with it, and the beggar followed the messenger again. When he reached the door and went inside, the beggar said: "A beggar! A beggar!" Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) said: "Give it to him," so they gave it to him. Then Sayyidah Safiyyah (may Allah be pleased with her) sent word to the beggar and said: "By Allah, if you come back, you will never receive any good from me." Then she sent another dirham and bought (grapes) with it.
