Shaddad bin Abdullah (may Allah be pleased with him) said: I heard Abu Umamah (may Allah be pleased with him) say that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "O son of Adam, if you spend your surplus (wealth), it is better for you, and if you hold it back, it is bad for you. You will not be blamed for (keeping) what suffices (keeping wealth according to need). Begin (your charity) with your own dependants, and the upper hand is better than the lower hand."

Sayyiduna Abu Sa'id al-Khudri (may Allah be pleased with him) said: Once we were on a journey with the beloved Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) when suddenly a man came on his mount and began to strike to the right and to the left. So the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Whoever has a spare mount, let him give it to the one who has no mount, and whoever has spare provisions, let him give them to the one who has no provisions." Then he (peace and blessings be upon him) mentioned some kinds of wealth, until we thought that none of us had any right to anything surplus.

Sayyiduna Rakb al-Misri (may Allah be pleased with him) said that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Glad tidings to the one who is humble without any shortcoming in him, who humbles himself without being destitute, who spends wealth that he gathered without disobedience, who shows mercy to the lowly and the destitute, and who keeps company with people of understanding and wisdom. Glad tidings to the one who humbles himself, whose earnings are pure, who sets his inner self right, who makes his outward conduct good, and who keeps his evil away from people. Glad tidings to the one who acts upon his knowledge, spends the surplus of his wealth, and holds back the surplus of his speech."

Sayyiduna Rakb al-Misri (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates the same hadith, except that he did not mention the saying: "Glad tidings to the one who humbles himself and whose earnings are good," and he (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Glad tidings to the one who makes his inner self pure and his outward conduct excellent."
