Sayyiduna Abu Sa'id al-Khudri (may Allah be pleased with him) says: When the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) was among us, we used to give sadaqat al-fitr on behalf of every young and old, slave and free person: a sa' of food, a sa' of cheese (aqit), or a sa' of barley, dates or raisins. We kept giving it in this way until Sayyiduna Mu'awiyah (may Allah be pleased with him) came for Hajj or Umrah and spoke to the people from the pulpit, and among what he said to them was: "I think that two mudds of the brown wheat of Syria are equal to a sa' of dates." So the people adopted that. But as for me, I will always keep giving what I used to give.
In one narration of al-Razzaz it is: a sa' of wheat or a sa' of cheese.

A man from the people said to him: Or two mudds of wheat? He said: That is the valuation of Sayyiduna Mu'awiyah (may Allah be pleased with him); I neither accept it nor act upon it.
