Nafi' (may Allah have mercy on him) relates from Sayyiduna Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "For honey, out of every ten skins, one skin."
Sadaqah bin Abdullah al-Samin alone narrated it in this form, and he is da'if (weak); Ahmad bin Hanbal, Yahya bin Ma'in and others declared him weak. Abu Isa al-Tirmidhi said: I asked Muhammad bin Isma'il al-Bukhari about this hadith and he said: It is from Nafi' from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), mursal.

Sayyiduna Abu Sayyarah al-Mut'i (may Allah be pleased with him) says: I said: O Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), I have bees. He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Pay the tithe on it." I said: O Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), reserve its mountain for me. So he (peace and blessings be upon him) reserved it for him.
This is the most authentic of what has been narrated on the obligation of the tithe on it, and it is munqati' (its chain is broken). Abu Isa al-Tirmidhi said: I asked Muhammad bin Isma'il al-Bukhari about it and he said: This is a mursal hadith; Sulayman bin Musa did not meet any of the Companions of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), and nothing on the zakah of honey is authentic.
Al-Bukhari said: Abdullah bin Muharrar is matruk al-hadith (abandoned in hadith), meaning by that a weakening of his narration from al-Zuhri, from Abu Salamah, from Abu Hurayrah, marfu', concerning honey.

Sayyiduna Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) says that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) wrote to the people of Yemen: "A tithe is to be collected from honey."

Amr bin Shu'ayb relates from his father, from his grandfather, that Hilal, one of the Banu Mut'an, came to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) with the tithe of his honey bees, and asked him to reserve a valley called Salabah for him, so the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) reserved that valley for him. When Umar bin al-Khattab (may Allah be pleased with him) became caliph, Sufyan bin Wahb (may Allah be pleased with him) wrote to Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) asking him about that. Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) wrote to him: "If he pays you what he used to pay to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) as the tithe of his bees, then reserve Salabah for him; otherwise they are merely rain-flies (wild bees), which anyone who wishes may eat (from)."

Amr bin Shu'ayb relates from his father, from his grandfather (may Allah be pleased with them both), that Shababah, a clan of Fahm, (and he mentioned something similar), and he said: "From every ten skins, one skin." Sufyan bin Abdullah al-Thaqafi (may Allah be pleased with him) says that he used to reserve two valleys for them; so they paid him what they used to pay to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), and he reserved their two valleys for them.

Sayyiduna Sa'd bin Abi Dhubab (may Allah be pleased with him) says: I came to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) and accepted Islam. Then I said: "O Messenger of Allah, write (a document) for those of my people who have accepted Islam concerning their properties." So he (peace and blessings be upon him) wrote it and appointed me as governor over them. Then Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him), and then Umar (may Allah be pleased with him), appointed me as governor. Sa'd (may Allah be pleased with him) was from the people of al-Sarat. He says: I spoke to my people about honey and said to them that there is zakah on it, for there is no good in produce on which zakah is not paid. They said: How much zakah? I said: "A tenth." So I collected the tithe from them, and I came to Umar bin al-Khattab (may Allah be pleased with him) and informed him of it. Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) took it and sold it, and then put its price into the treasury of the Muslims.

Al-Harith bin Abi Dhubab relates from Munir bin Abdullah, from his father, from Sa'd bin Abi Dhubab (may Allah be pleased with him). Ibn Najiyah said to us: This is how he said it; and he mentioned the hadith with its meaning.
Al-Bukhari said: Abdullah, the father of Munir, from Sa'd bin Abi Dhubab, his hadith is not authentic. And Ali bin al-Madini said about this hadith: This Munir, we do not know him except in this hadith.

Tawus relates that Mu'adh bin Jabal (may Allah be pleased with him) was brought the waqs of cattle (the numbers between two zakah thresholds) and, I think, honey. Mu'adh (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "Regarding neither of them did the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) command me anything."

Malik (may Allah have mercy on him) relates from Abdullah bin Abi Bakr (may Allah have mercy on him) that a letter came from Umar bin Abd al-Aziz (may Allah have mercy on him) to my father while he was at Mina, (saying) that zakah is not to be taken from horses or from honey.
Imam al-Shafi'i (may Allah have mercy on him) says: Sa'd bin Abi Dhubab (may Allah be pleased with him) relates what indicates that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) did not command him to collect zakah from honey, and that it was something he himself saw fit, and his people gave it to him voluntarily. Al-Za'farani says that Imam al-Shafi'i (may Allah have mercy on him) said: The hadith that "there is a tithe on honey" is weak, and the one that "the tithe is not to be taken from it" is (also) weak, except from Umar bin Abd al-Aziz. My choice is that it is not taken from it, because the Sunnahs and reports are established regarding what it is taken from, and they are not established regarding it, so it is as though it is exempted.

It is reported of Mu'adh (may Allah be pleased with him) that he did not take anything from honey. Ibrahim bin Maysarah (may Allah have mercy on him) relates from Tawus (may Allah have mercy on him) that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) sent Sayyiduna Mu'adh (may Allah be pleased with him) to the people of Yemen, and he narrated the hadith similarly.
