Sayyiduna Abu Humayd al-Sa'idi (may Allah be pleased with him) says: We set out with the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) on the expedition of Tabuk, and we came in Wadi al-Qura to a garden belonging to a woman. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Estimate its yield." So we estimated it, and the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) also estimated it at ten wasqs of dates, and said: "Keep count of it until we return, if Allah wills." Then we went on until we reached Tabuk. Then he narrated the hadith and said: Then we came back until we reached Wadi al-Qura, and the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) asked the woman about the fruit of her garden: "How much did its fruit come to?" She said: It came to ten wasqs.

Sulayman bin Yasar (may Allah have mercy on him) says that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) used to send Abdullah bin Rawahah (may Allah be pleased with him), and he would make the estimate between him and the Jews. Then they gathered for him some of their women's jewellery and said: This is for you; lighten it for us and overlook (some) in the division. Abdullah bin Rawahah (may Allah be pleased with him) said: O community of Jews! By Allah, you are among the most hateful of Allah's creation to me, yet that will not lead me to wrong you. As for the bribe you have offered, it is unlawful, and we do not consume it. They said: By this (justice) the heavens and the earth stand firm.

Sayyiduna Jabir (may Allah be pleased with him) says: Allah Almighty gave (the land of) Banu al-Nadir to His Messenger as spoils, and the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) left them as they were and made it (the produce) shared between himself and them. Then he (peace and blessings be upon him) sent Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Rawahah (may Allah be pleased with him), who made the estimate. Then he said to them: "O community of Jews! You are the most hateful of people to me; you killed the prophets of Allah and lied against Allah. No, my hatred for you does not lead me to wrong you. I have estimated your dates at twenty thousand wasqs. If you wish, take it, and if you refuse, then it is mine." They said: "By this the heavens and the earth stand firm." Then they said: "We have taken it, so leave us."

Sayyidah Aishah (may Allah be pleased with her), relating the affair of Khaybar, says that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) used to send Abdullah bin Rawahah (may Allah be pleased with him) to the Jews, and he would estimate their date palms when the fruit ripened, before any of it was eaten. Then he would give the Jews the choice either to keep it according to that estimate or to hand it over to Abdullah bin Rawahah, so that the zakah could be assessed before the fruits were eaten and dispersed.
