Sayyiduna Mu'adh (may Allah be pleased with him) said: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) sent me to Yemen so that from them "from every forty cattle a thaniyyah cow is to be taken, from every thirty a male or female yearling calf, and from every adult one dinar or its equivalent in the currency of the time."

Sayyiduna Mu'adh bin Jabal (may Allah be pleased with him) said: The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) sent me to Yemen and ordered me: "to collect a male or female yearling calf from every thirty cattle, a musinnah from every forty, and from every adult male one dinar or its equivalent in the currency of the time."

Ubaydullah bin Umar (may Allah have mercy on him) said: I asked Nafi' about cattle, and he said: It has reached me from Mu'adh bin Jabal (may Allah be pleased with him) that he said: In every thirty cattle there is a male or female yearling calf, and in every forty cattle there is one cow.

Tawus al-Yamani (may Allah have mercy on him) said that Sayyiduna Mu'adh bin Jabal (may Allah be pleased with him) collected a yearling calf from thirty cattle and a musinnah from forty cattle. Fewer than that were brought to him, and he refused to take anything from them, and said: I have not heard anything about this from the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), until I meet him and ask him. But the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) passed away before Sayyiduna Mu'adh bin Jabal (may Allah be pleased with him) came to him.

Amr bin Dinar narrates from Tawus (may Allah have mercy on him) that the waqs of cattle (the number between two zakah thresholds) was brought to Sayyiduna Mu'adh bin Jabal (may Allah be pleased with him), and he said: "The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) did not command me anything concerning it." Imam al-Shafi'i (may Allah have mercy on him) said: Al-waqs is what does not reach the obligatory amount.
Al-Hasan bin Umarah said that the report which al-Hakam narrated from Tawus from Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) is not a proof, in which he said: When the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) sent Sayyiduna Mu'adh (may Allah be pleased with him) to the people of Yemen, he was asked: "What have you been commanded?" He said: "I have been commanded to take a female or male yearling calf from thirty cattle, and a musinnah from every forty."

Al-Hasan bin Umarah (may Allah have mercy on him) said: Al-Hakam narrated this same hadith to me.
It has a supporting report (shahid) with a better chain than this.
Hadith Referenceالسنن الكبرى للبيهقي / كتاب الزكاة / 7292
Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) said: When the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) sent Sayyiduna Mu'adh (may Allah be pleased with him) to Yemen, he ordered him to take from every thirty cattle a male or female yearling calf that is a jadha'ah, and from every forty cattle a musinnah. They said: What is the ruling about the awqas? He said: He did not command me anything about them, and I will ask the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) when I go to him (peace and blessings be upon him). So when he came to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), he asked him about the awqas, and he (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "There is no zakah in them." Al-Mas'udi said: The awqas are what is below thirty and what is between forty and sixty. When they reach sixty, there are two female yearling calves in them; when they reach seventy, there is one musinnah and one yearling calf; when they reach eighty, there are two musinnahs; and when they reach ninety, there are three yearling calves. Al-Mas'udi said: Awqas is (spelled) with sin, so do not take it as being with sad.

Zuhayr said: I think that Sayyiduna Ali bin Abi Talib (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates from the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) that he (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Bring me a quarter of a tenth." Then he narrated the long hadith, in which he said: "In thirty cattle there is one yearling calf, and in forty cattle one musinnah, and there is no zakah on working animals."
Hadith Referenceالسنن الكبرى للبيهقي / كتاب الزكاة / 7294
Sayyiduna Abdullah (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) that he (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "In every thirty cattle there is a male or female yearling calf, and in forty cattle one musinnah."
Hadith Referenceالسنن الكبرى للبيهقي / كتاب الزكاة / 7295
Abu Bakr bin Muhammad bin Amr bin Hazm (may Allah have mercy on him) narrates from his father, and he from his grandfather (may Allah be pleased with him), that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) sent a letter to the people of Yemen in which it was written: "In every thirty cattle there is a male or female calf, and in every forty cattle one cow."
Hadith Referenceالسنن الكبرى للبيهقي / كتاب الزكاة / 7296
Dawud from al-Sha'bi (may Allah have mercy on him), and Ibn Abi Ayyash from Anas (may Allah be pleased with him), narrate in marfu' form that he (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "In forty cattle there is one musinnah, and in thirty cattle one male or female yearling calf."
Hadith Referenceالسنن الكبرى للبيهقي / كتاب الزكاة / 7297
Sayyiduna Jabir bin Abdullah (may Allah be pleased with them both) said: In every five cattle there is one sheep, in ten cattle two sheep, in fifteen three, and in twenty cattle four sheep.
Imam al-Zuhri (may Allah have mercy on him) said: When they reach twenty-five, there is one cow up to seventy-five; when they exceed seventy-five, there are two cows up to one hundred and twenty; and when they exceed one hundred and twenty, there is one cow in every forty. Ma'mar said: Al-Zuhri said: It has reached us that their saying that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "In every thirty cattle there is a yearling calf, and in every forty cattle one cow," was a relief for the people of Yemen, and then this came after that.
So this hadith is mawquf (stopping short of the Prophet) and munqati' (with a broken chain); it has also been narrated from al-Zuhri through another chain as munqati', and a munqati' report does not establish proof. The reports before it are better known.
