Sayyidah Umm Salamah (may Allah be pleased with her) said: I heard the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) say: "When you are present with a dying person or a sick person, say what is good, for the angels say Amin to whatever you say." So when Abu Salamah (may Allah be pleased with him) died, I said: O Messenger of Allah, what should I say? He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Say: 'Allahumma ighfir lana wa lahu wa a'qibna minhu 'uqba salihah' (O Allah, forgive us and him, and grant us a good replacement after him)." She said: I said these words, and Allah Almighty gave me Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him).

Sayyidah Umm Salamah (may Allah be pleased with her) said: I heard the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) say: "There is no Muslim who is struck by a calamity and says what Allah, the Mighty and Majestic, has commanded him: 'Inna lillahi wa inna ilayhi raji'un, Allahumma'jurni fi musibati wakhluf li khayran minha' (We belong to Allah and to Him we return; O Allah, reward me in my calamity and give me something better than it in its place), except that Allah, the Mighty and Majestic, gives him something better than it in its place." She said: When Abu Salamah (may Allah be pleased with him) died, I said: Which of the Muslims is better than Abu Salamah? His was the first household to emigrate to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him). Then I said those words, and Allah, the Mighty and Majestic, gave me the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) in his place. She said: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) sent Hatib bin Abi Balta'ah (may Allah be pleased with him) to me to propose marriage to me on his behalf. I said: I have a daughter, and I am a jealous woman. He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "As for her daughter, we will pray to Allah, the Mighty and Majestic, to make her free of need, and I will pray to Allah to take away the jealousy."

Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) said: What an excellent balance and what an excellent rank: "Those who, when a calamity strikes them, say: Indeed we belong to Allah, and indeed to Him we will return. Those are the ones upon whom are blessings from their Lord and mercy" [Surah al-Baqarah: 156-157]; this is the excellent balance. And "it is those who are the rightly guided" [Surah al-Baqarah: 157]; this is the excellent station and rank.

Sayyiduna Anas bin Malik (may Allah be pleased with him) said that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) passed by a woman who was weeping at a grave, and he (peace and blessings be upon him) said to her: "Fear Allah and be patient." She said: Leave me to my state, for you have not been struck by a calamity like mine. She did not recognise him (peace and blessings be upon him). When she was told that it was the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), a state like death came over her, and she came to the door of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) and found no doorkeeper there. She said: O Messenger of Allah, I did not recognise you. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Patience is that which is shown at the first moment of the shock."
Imam Bukhari (may Allah have mercy on him) recorded it in his Sahih from Adam bin Abi Iyas, and some reported in the hadith: "Patience is only that which is shown at the onset of the shock."

Sayyiduna Usamah bin Zayd (may Allah be pleased with them both) said that a daughter of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) sent him a message: "My son has died; please come to us." He (peace and blessings be upon him) sent back a message: "He conveys his greeting of peace to you, and says that to Allah belongs what He took and to Him belongs what He gave, and everything with Him has an appointed term, so be patient and hope for the reward." Then she sent to him, swearing that he must come to her. So he (peace and blessings be upon him) got up, and with him were Sayyiduna Sa'd bin Ubadah (may Allah be pleased with him) and another man. The child was handed to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) while his breath was rattling; I think he said: as if it were an old waterskin. His (peace and blessings be upon him) eyes overflowed with tears. Sayyiduna Sa'd (may Allah be pleased with him) said: O Messenger of Allah, what is this? He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "This is mercy that Allah has placed in the hearts of His servants, and Allah shows mercy only to those of His servants who are merciful."

Al-Nadr bin Anas narrates that Malik, the father of Anas (may Allah be pleased with him), said to his wife Umm Sulaym (may Allah be pleased with her): Do you not see this man (the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him)) declaring wine unlawful? Then he went off to Syria and perished there. Then Abu Talhah (may Allah be pleased with him) came and proposed marriage to Umm Sulaym (may Allah be pleased with her) and spoke to her about it. She said: O Abu Talhah, a man like you is not turned away, but you are a disbeliever and I am a Muslim woman, so it is not proper for me to marry you. He said: That is not your real concern. She said: What is my concern? He said: Gold and silver. Umm Sulaym (may Allah be pleased with her) said: I want nothing of the sort, neither gold nor silver; I ask of you Islam. He said: Who will help me with that? She said: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) will help you with it. So Abu Talhah (may Allah be pleased with him) set off towards the Prophet of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), while the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) was sitting among his Companions. When he (peace and blessings be upon him) saw him, he said: "Abu Talhah has come to you, with the radiance of Islam between his eyes." Then he came to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and told him what Umm Sulaym (may Allah be pleased with her) had said, and he (peace and blessings be upon him) married them on that basis. Thabit (may Allah have mercy on him) said: We have not heard of any dowry greater than this, that she was pleased with his accepting Islam as her dowry, and she married him. She was a woman with beautiful eyes and small in stature, and she lived with him until a son was born to him from her, and Abu Talhah (may Allah be pleased with him) loved him intensely. Then the child fell ill, and Abu Talhah (may Allah be pleased with him) was taken up with his illness. Then Abu Talhah (may Allah be pleased with him) went to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), and the child died. Umm Sulaym (may Allah be pleased with her) said: Let no one give Abu Talhah the news of his son's death until I inform him myself. So she prepared the child and laid him aside. Abu Talhah (may Allah be pleased with him) came from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and asked: How is my son? She said: O Abu Talhah, he is more at rest now than he has been since his illness began. Abu Talhah (may Allah be pleased with him) said: 'Alhamdulillah' (All praise is for Allah). Then she brought him his dinner and he ate from it; then she got up, put on perfume and presented herself to him, and he had intercourse with her. When Umm Sulaym (may Allah be pleased with her) knew that Abu Talhah (may Allah be pleased with him) had eaten and had been intimate with her, she said: O Abu Talhah, what do you think: if a people lent something to another people and then asked for it back, would it be right for them to withhold it from them? He said: No. Umm Sulaym (may Allah be pleased with her) said: Allah Almighty had lent you your son, and then He has taken him back to Himself, so hope for the reward for your son's death and be patient. He became angry and said: You did not tell me, and only when I had done what I did, you now give me the news of my son's death? Then in the morning he went to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) and informed him, and the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "May Allah bless the two of you in your past night." So she conceived from that. Umm Sulaym (may Allah be pleased with her) used to travel with the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him); when he (peace and blessings be upon him) set out she would set out with him, and when he (peace and blessings be upon him) entered (returned), she would enter with him. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "When Umm Sulaym gives birth, bring the child to me." On the night they drew near to Madinah, her labour pains began, and she said: O Allah, I used to enter when Your Prophet entered and set out when Your Prophet set out, and now this matter has come. Then, when the two of them reached Madinah, she gave birth to a boy. She said to her son Anas (may Allah be pleased with him): Take this child to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him). So he took the child to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), who was branding animals. When he (peace and blessings be upon him) looked at the child, he said: "Has the daughter of Milhan given birth?" He said: Yes. He (peace and blessings be upon him) put down what was in his hand, took the child and said: "Bring me some Ajwah dates." Then the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) took a date, chewed it and did tahnik for the child, and the child began to suck on it, and he (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Look at the Ansar's love for dates!" Then he (peace and blessings be upon him) himself did tahnik for him and named him Abdullah. Thabit (may Allah have mercy on him) said: He was counted among the best of the Muslims.

Abdullah bin Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) said: There were two crippled people in Makkah, and they had a son who would carry them in the morning, bring them to the mosque and seat them there, then he would go and earn a living. When evening came, he would carry them and take them back. One day the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) did not find him, so he (peace and blessings be upon him) asked about him, and they said: He has died. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "If anyone were spared for the sake of anyone, the son of the two crippled ones would have been spared." Thereafter he (peace and blessings be upon him) often used to say this.

Abu Zabyan (may Allah have mercy on him) said: We used to present our copies of the Qur'an to Alqamah bin Qays (may Allah have mercy on him), and he came to this verse: "No calamity strikes except by the permission of Allah, and whoever believes in Allah, He guides his heart" [Surah al-Taghabun: 11], meaning that whatever affliction befalls a person comes by Allah's command, and those who believe in Allah have their hearts set on the right course. We asked him about it, and he said: It refers to the man who is struck by a calamity and knows that it is from Allah, so he is content with it and submits.
