Mutarrif bin Abdullah bin al-Shikhkhir narrates from his father, Sayyiduna Abdullah bin al-Shikhkhir (may Allah be pleased with him), that when this verse, "Competition in increase diverts you" [Surah al-Takathur: 1], was revealed, the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "The son of Adam says: 'My wealth! My wealth!' But do you have anything of your wealth except what you ate and consumed, or wore and wore out, or gave in charity and so stored up (for the Hereafter)?"

Sayyiduna Abu Usayd al-Sa'idi (may Allah be pleased with him) said: I was the youngest of the Companions of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) and the one who heard the most from him (peace and blessings be upon him). The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Nothing remains for a child of kindness towards his father except four kinds of kindness: 1. Offering the funeral prayer for him. 2. Praying for him. 3. Carrying out his bequest after him and maintaining ties of kinship. 4. Honouring his friends."
